Goals
26 Years to Pluto
With only one shot at success, Alan Stern's team pulled off the New Horizons mission to Pluto. What they learned about the solar system is larger than life.
Your Show Must Go On
Remember why you came to BYU and, more important, why you came to earth. Do your utmost. Do the best you can. And then act as if there is no alternative but to succeed.
“Lay Hold upon the Word”: The Power of Wholehearted Living
I believe that one of the most significant obstacles to our laying hold upon the word is our inability to fully immerse ourselves in the word or other worthwhile things—our inability to fully focus on them.
An Unexpected Path
Even though life in general is beautiful and scenic, the road we travel will not always be an uneventful, direct course, even when we know where we are going. We have to learn to be flexible and to deal with the unexpected.
Are BYU's Aims Your Aims?
We believe with great confidence and conviction that you are optimally prepared for long lives of continued learning and substantial service in all that you do. We are proud of you and your accomplishments.
Our Personal Game Plan
Let me ask you another question: What is Heavenly Father’s game plan for us? I am sure He would like you to implement some of your goals and some of your parents’ goals. But His game plan for us is found in Moses 1:39: “For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” Now that is a game plan. It appears to me that our Father in Heaven has high expectations for all of us. Have we embraced those goals?
Seeing as Far as Forever
So let us remember that from the vantage point of a roof and a tall tree, our perspective is to look as far as forever and set goals that will not just help us through the week but will lead us on into eternity.
"Doubt Not, Fear Not"
If you ever have doubts—and of course you will—just remember this quotation from Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure: “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”
“A More Excellent Hope”
We yearn for hope not just for moments in this life, but for eternity. Our hope is bolstered by understanding faith and charity, the pure love of Christ.
Resolutions
This year, make resolutions to develop as the Savior did—intellectually, physically, socially, and spiritually. It will take effort, but will be worth it.
The Dauntless Spirit of Resolution
As you make resolutions for the new year, don't be too hard on yourself. Remember that God can give you the spirit of commitment and resolution you lack.
Where There Is No Vision
Be eager to take advantage of the opportunities before you. Create a vision for your life and persevere in the attainment of it.
Reflection and Resolution
The beginning of a new year is the perfect time for reflection on the lessons learned as well as resolution to become the people we want to be.
“Where There Is No Vision, the People Perish”
We must gain our own vision of God and His plan. Elder Didier shows how we can learn from Adam and Eve's example to receive a vision and live faithfully.
Begin with the End in Mind
Begin with the end in mind. Shape your own destiny. Remember that the development of your career, your family, and your faith in God is your individual responsibility—for which you alone will be held accountable.
“What Seek Ye?”
"What seek ye?" Heavenly Father wants us to seek after the very best and stretch ourselves to do that which is for our eternal good.
Seek Higher Flight Levels
Just as airplanes are safer when flying above inclement weather, so are we safer when we seek higher “flight levels” by being obedient to the commandments.
Goals
Goals help us to determine where we are going and how to get there. Our goal should be to return to Heavenly Father and we should strive for it every day.
Looking to the Future
Robert Backman reminds us that there are many wonders yet to come to fruition. The upcoming generation has a responsibility to create and bring them forth.
A Creative Mind
At times I wonder if we know how to think, if we are developing a creative mind, because that is where all good works and all important accomplishments begin.
Some Thoughts on Goal Setting, Objectives, and Measurements
We often set quantitative goals as we strive for improvement, but we must not to let check-mark goals take us away from true, qualitative progression.
“Serious About the Things to Be Done”
As we get serious about our covenants and look for the Lord's plan in our lives, we will see the blessings waiting for us.
Goals and Family Life
Your goals are important to God. When you share a goal with Him, it becomes an eternal objective—taking you toward that great goal of eternal life.
The Time for New Year’s Resolutions
As we begin a new year and contemplate New Year’s resolutions, let us not forget the things we have pondered over the recent Christmas holiday. Center your goals on having the spirit of Christmas with you always.
Your 1975 Game Plan
This year, ask God to help you create a game plan that will help you overcome the adversary and reach your temporal and spiritual goals.
You’ve Got to Have a Dream
To make our dreams come true, we must righteously exercise our agency to make them become a reality. The Lord will help us achieve our righteous goals.
The Story of My Life
Thomas L. Martin humorously describes the main events of his life and highlights how the hand of the Lord worked to help him reach all his righteous goals.
