Forty nine per cent of the respondents questioned for the India Today Mood of the Nation survey said that a non-Gandhi and non-dynast leader could only revive the Congress. Yet, when they were asked to name the leader who was most likely to revive the grand old party of the country, Priyanka Gandhi received the highest support-15 per cent backed her-followed by Rahul Gandhi-11 per cent reposed faith in him. This contradictory response perhaps best illustrates the lack of leadership alternatives that the Congress has offered to the people of India. Octogenarian former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was third preferred with 8 per cent supporters. The party has chosen 72-year-old Sonia Gandhi as the interim president. She got backing of 7 per cent respondents, sharing the honour with 41-year-old Sachin Pilot.
