The annual workshop was organized by UN-OHRLLS with the support of the government of Italy. The workshop was attended by 35 LDC National Focal Points. The LDC NFPs were invited to present the main findings emerging from their national review process in preparation for the midterm review of the Istanbul Programme. The annual workshop was organized by UN-OHRLLS with the support and in close cooperation with the European Commission, as major development partner of the LDCs. The workshop was attended by 26 LDC National Focal Points and drew on expert resource persons from UN-OHRLLS and the Commission. The LDC NFPs were invited to present the main findings emerging from their national review process in preparation for the midterm review of the Istanbul Programme.

    The annual workshop was organized by UN-OHRLLS in close cooperation with the Government of Benin and UNDP. Held on the eve of the Ministerial Meeting on New Partnerships for Productive Capacity Building in the LDCs, the workshop was chaired by H.E. Prof. Nassirou BAKO-ARIFARI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin and Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of LDCs. Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, Under-Secretary‐General and High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS (UN‐OHRLLS) and Mr. Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director, Regional Bureau for Africa, delivered opening speeches. The first session focused on support provided by the UN System to support the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action at country level. An interactive roundtable was organized with presentations by UN Resident Coordinators from several LDCs, such as Rwanda, Benin, LIberia, Angola as well as Cape Verde as a graduated country. During the second session all national focal points attending the workshop took the floor to present the progress made and challenges encountered in their countries in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action. Finally during the third session, a presentation was made on the future of the International Migrants Remittances Observatory (IMRO) for the LDCs by Mr. Eric Adja, Acting Director General, IMRO.

    M. Gyan Chandra Acharya, Under-Secretary‐General and High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS (UN‐OHRLLS) underscored the importance of the annual workshop for LDC national focal points. He then assessed progress made so far in the implementation the Istanbul Programme of Action, including the rate of changes towards achieving the goals and targets of IPoA and the respective contribution of all stakeholders to these changes. H.E. M. Jean Francis Zinsou, Permanent Representative of Benin to the United Nations and Chair of LDC Global Bureau, shared his perspectives on the implementation of IPoA and challenges faced by LDCs. He also seized the opportunity to brief participations about the work that is being carried out by the LDC Group, under his chairmanship, in projecting the interests of the group at the global stage. Later in the meeting, M. Hari Odari, on behalf of H. E. M. Shanker Das Bairagi, Chair of the WTO LDC Group, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN, briefed participants on the current status of the Doha Round Negotiations, highlighting the current stalemate in which these negotiations are and LDC specific issues that will be tabled during the upcoming Doha meeting. These introductory remarks were followed by a presentation by Ms. Luisa Bernal, UNDP, on the contribution of her institution to the implementation of IPoA, highlighting especially areas of programmatic interventions of UNDP. Ms. Bernal also shared with participants lessons that are emerging from such engagement. Following this presentation, LDC national focal points took the floor.

    11 March 2013Workshop on Fostering the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action for the LDCsBhutan, Thimphu
    The workshop, organized by UN-OHRLLS in close cooperation with the Royal Government of Bhutan, provided an opportunity to bring the global and local perspectives together on the progress and challenges in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries in Bhutan. Following the opening statement by the Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs of Bhutan, Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, USG and High Representative, provided a briefing on the progress made in the implementation of the IPoA, as well as efforts toward mainstreaming of the Istanbul Programme into the Post-2015 UN development agenda as well as the Rio+20 follow up. Such global perspective was complemented by presentations by the Secretary of the Gross National Happiness Commission on priorities and challenges in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme at the national level. An interactive session with questions and answers followed, including interventions from Government LDC Focal Points bringing in sectoral perspectives. The workshop concluded with a summary of the main points raised and follow-up actions by Ms. Schroderus-Fox, Director of UN-OHRLLS.
