Evesham school's $250K upgrade on hold

Updated September 03, 2009 11:49:00

Upgrades at a school in Queensland's central-west will be delayed until a decision is made on whether it will remain open.

The Evesham State School, west of Longreach, has just one student enrolled.

The school has received $250,000 in federal funding under the latest round of money announced for primary schools.

Education Queensland says it is conducting a review of the Evesham school and consulting the community about its future.

A spokesman says the department has negotiated with the Federal Government to delay major construction at schools that have been identified for potential closure.

However, the Isolated Children's Parents Association (ICPA) says the school was eligible to receive the $250,000 funding, even though it has only one student.

ICPA Queensland president Lorraine McGinnis says Education Queensland is consulting with the local community.

"On the basis of the federal guidelines for the Building Education revolution funding, schools of 50 [students] or less were eligible for $250,000 in funding," she said.

"Schools closed or mothballed were ineligible.

"We can certainly offer some ideas about how they might spend the money that will be quarantined in this case."
