Oculus Rift S isn’t the Rift 2, but no external sensors is a big thumbs up

The hardware news just keeps coming from GDC this week, with today's big headline courtesy of Oculus. They've just announced the Rift S, a new VR headset for PC that has a higher resolution display and built-in tracking to make it even easier to jump into your favourite VR games - and they've partnered with Lenovo to build it.

Boneworks looks like the next step for VR interactivity

Climbing a ladder seems like such a mundane thing to be excited about, but think about how complex it really is. You need both hands, feet, coordination, balance and power - something that seemed nigh impossible to simulate in VR with limited head and hand tracking until Boneworks surfaced today. As a game, I'm not sure what to make of it, but as a showcase…

Harmonix turn VR gunfire into music in Audica this March

I really need to buy a VR headset soon. I've had the chance to play some of Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer on borrowed hardware and loved both - now prolific rhythm studio Harmonix are mashing those concepts together and calling it Audica. One colour-coded space-gun in each hand, blue and orange targets to shoot to the beat and the occasional oncoming meteorite to…

ZeniMax and Facebook settle Oculus legal battle

Over four years in the making, ZeniMax Media's legal rumble with Oculus and Facebook over Oculus Rift VR cybergoggles has finally ended in a settlement. They had gone through the courts, where a jury initially ruled that Facebook owed ZeniMax $500 million dollars, then a judge later reduced that, and the bickering continued. Their related battle with John Carmack ended in October, and now the…

Oculus Rift 2 is still happening, says Facebook

VR cybergoggles maker Oculus have insisted they're still making a next generation Rift headset despite another key departure from the company. Brendan Iribe, the co-founder and former CEO of Oculus, is the latest person to have upped sticks from parent company Facebook following some internal restructuring of their VR division last week, according to a new report from TechCrunch, and was, until yesterday, meant to…

The Accounting+ trailer is the best thing you’ll watch today

Back in the day, when we first started RPS, a lot of my day was spent searching through GameTrailers (sniff, thanks GameTrailers) to find interesting-looking videos to write snark underneath. Now we force Dominic to do that, by means too criminal to describe, because there are only so many years you can do it for before you need to kill again. But I can't stop…

Vive’s subscription service will shortly arrive on… Oculus Rift?

Just a couple of weeks ago HTC was confidently rebutting claims about VR dying a huge and monstrous death with record sales of their Vive headset. Now, in a rather more desperate-seeming move, they've announced their Viveport subscription service will shortly be available on arch-rival headset, the Oculus Rift. Who's winning the race for total VR domination? You decide!

Feature: Maybe we're in VR right now?

Reality bleed: VR in the wilds of theatre

A sack is placed over your head. A voice, alarmingly close, barks that you are the next test subject. Your hands are bound and you are led, still hooded, to another room where your attendant tells you, as he straps you into a chair, that you will come to no physical harm. The hood is removed and you are welcomed to a claustrophobic cell by…

Oculus ditches Windows 7 and 8 support for new Rift features

Bad news for Rift owners still running Windows 7 or Windows 8 PCs this morning, as Oculus have announced they've updated the minimum OS spec requirement for their Rift VR goggles to Windows 10. That doesn't mean your VR headset will suddenly stop working with your Windows 7/8 PC, of course - it's just that you'll probably miss out on all of Oculus' new-fangled gubbins further down the…

VR robo-stealth ’em up Budget Cuts sneaks out at last

Here's what marks Budget Cuts as a cut above other VR funtimes: it's been 20 minutes since I took my cybergoggles off and I still sort of feel like I'm in VR. That used to happen all the time when I first got my Vive, but my brain's since learned to tell the difference between the real and the virtual. Budget Cuts, though, feels so…

VR rhythm game Beat Saber swishes into early access

My Vive, which once made me literally dance with joy, gathers dust. That's less to do with how much fun I know I'd have if I set the damn thing up, and everything to do with the faff. I've got to deal with wobbly lighthouse stands, a PC that turns off if I bump into it and the hassle of putting contact lenses in. Why…

Oculus issuing $15 apology voucher for #goggpocalypse

There is no pain greater in our universe than not being able to use your virtual reality goggles for a whole day. As such, the $15 Oculus store voucher the Rift-makers are offering by way of apology for yesterday's #goggpocalypse, in which messed-up software effectively broke their headset for a while, only begins to salve the wound. I demand that Ian Oculus comes to my…

ICEd: Oculus Rift cybergoggles are broken today while the megacorp work on a fix

Update: this is now fixed, though users will need to take a long route to the update. Oculus officially confirmed that the problem was an expired software certificate, which caused further problems because it also wonked the usual updater. I keep telling you: if you want to jam with the console cowboys in cyberspace, you've gotta roll your own goggs. These megacorp-supplied cybergoggles are controlled…

Steam hardware charts: The GTX 1060 and 1080p gaming rule the roost

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is still the most popular graphics card among Steam users, according to the store's latest hardware survey, with 14.05% of all users using it as their card of choice. Nvidia's old GTX 750Ti isn't far behind, though, as that's still being used by 13.05% of users, making it the second most popular gaming card for the month of February.

Beat Saber is Guitar Hero for wannabe Jedi

“May the Force rise to meet you” as the priests and altar boys of the Star Wars universe say. In Beat Saber, a VR rhythm game described by its creators as “a mashup of Guitar Hero and Fruit Ninja”, this is exactly what happens. The Force, manifesting here as coloured panels with glowing arrows painting on them, fly toward you in time to a healthy…

Oculus Rift price drops to $349 / $349 for Black Friday

If you saw our heads-up about the HTC Vive Black Friday deal earlier this week (to recap, you get a Vive, Fallout 4 VR, Doom VFR and a free deluxe audio strap and more for £599 starting from tomorrow), then you'll be pleased to know that the Oculus Rift is also being discounted for Black Friday - starting TODAY, in fact. It's almost as if…

Report: Oculus to announce $200 standalone VR headset this year

Facebook is planning to unveil a $200 (£150-odd) wireless Oculus VR headset later this year that you can use without connecting to either a PC or a phone, according to a Bloomberg report. The new headset, codename "Pacific", will be a fully standalone product. So you'll be able to take it out of the box, strap it on your head, and start playing games and…

Oculus Rift + Touch bundle price cut £200 in sale

Folks who liked the look of diving into cyberspace but were put off by the price: is £399/$399 low enough for you to bite? Oculus are taking their tops off for the summer - the top £200/$100 of the price of Rift cybergoggles bundled with Touch motion controllers, that is. Sorry. That's... that's really bad. I shouldn't have done that. I do have a desire…

ZeniMax’s legal war over Oculus Rift targets Gear VR

ZeniMax, the owners of studios including Bethesda and id Software, have sent their lawyers after Samsung over the Gear VR phone cybergoggles. Following their $500 million (partial) legal victory against Rift makers Oculus, where a jury agreed that Oculus folks had broken a non-disclosure agreement with ZeniMax and infringed upon their copyright, ZeniMax are trying to halt the Rift and going after related people and…
