The Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls set for 2020 release

The Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls set for 2020 release
If you cast your mind back a few years, you may recall that John Turturro started shooting a movie entitled Going Places, a loose remake of the 1974 French film Les Valseuses, which was subsequently revealed to be a spinoff from The Big Lebowski, with Turturro returning to the role of Jesus Quintana.

Well, it seems the film is finally set to see the light of day, with Deadline reporting that Screen Media has snapped up the rights to the movie – now titled The Jesus Rolls – with plans to release it early in the New Year.

Directed by Turturro (with the blessing of – but no involvement from – The Big Lebowski directors Joel and Ethan Coen), The Jesus Rolls also features a cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou, Jon Hamm, Susan Sarandon and Pete Davidson. A synopsis for the film, first revealed back in 2016, reads:

John Turturro plays Jesus Quintana in ‘The Jesus Rolls,

Only You review – a perfectly realised story of love and longing

The course of true love runs less than smooth in this engrossing debut feature from writer-director Harry Wootliff

Here’s something special – a terrifically engrossing drama about two wholly believable characters, made with the kind of wit, honesty and raw emotional intimacy that pierces right to the heart of their relationship. Vividly rendered, and filled with tangible yearning, it strikes a balance between romantic passion and mundane domesticity, as the skin-prickling attraction of new love is tested by the day-to-day tribulations of real life.

At the heart of the film’s charms are a pair of flawless performances by Laia Costa and Josh O’Connor, both superbly directed by writer-director Harry Wootliff in her very impressive feature debut. Costa, who did such breathtaking work in the one-take German drama Victoria, is Elena, a Spanish émigré living in Glasgow. Stumbling home from a New Year’s Eve party, she finds herself

Film Review: ‘Firecrackers’

If you go to film festivals long enough, you end up getting cynical about a few things. For example, it becomes clear that for political reasons, programmers are often pressured to support filmmakers from the country where the fests take place. Instead of getting first dibs on the best of what’s created in their own backyards, they wind up making room for local movies that got turned down by other festivals. That means, when in Berlin, you’re better off skipping the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section. Venice is the wrong place to see Italian films. And when it comes to Toronto, don’t waste your time on Canadian fare.

Now, if you’re not a film-festival burnout, you might (rightly) ask: But isn’t that a little harsh? Surely there are some treasures stashed away among all those homemade movies? And to that, I would offer up Jasmin Mozaffari’s “Firecrackers,

‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Premiere Halted by Electrical Sparks

‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Premiere Halted by Electrical Sparks
Saturday night’s premiere of “Hobbs & Shaw” was brought to a halt following a brief electrical issue in the Dolby Theater.

Reports from inside the venue say an electrical grid toward the front of the theater started sparking about 30 minutes into the screening, causing flashes and loud popping sounds to fill the room. The sparks then moved upward from the floor in the center of the orchestra and back toward a block of seats.

Although security did not evacuate the theater, a number of panicked guests fled from the venue, leading to widespread confusion.

Before the movie resumed, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took time to address the audience, letting attendees know that he was waiting in the wings to make sure crowd was safe. However, “Jason Statham ran his a– out of here”, he added.

The delay lasted only around 15 minutes before the film began playing again.

In “Hobbs & Shaw,

‘Stranger Things 4’ Theories: 5 Big Questions We Have After That Finale

Spoilers for Stranger Things 3 follow below. Stranger Things 3 saw a whirlwind of changes occurring in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. After ‘Midsommar,’ Ari Aster Wants to Make a ‘Zonky Nightmare Comedy’

After ‘Midsommar,’ Ari Aster Wants to Make a ‘Zonky Nightmare Comedy’
While “Hereditary” introduced Ari Aster as one seriously brilliant and twisted genre auteur, “Midsommar” had some fans concerned for his mental health. During a candid and often funny Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything), the new reigning king of “elevated horror” (along with “Get Out” director Jordan Peele) hinted at some potential themes for his next projects, and his answer may come as a surprise to anyone familiar with his work. When asked whether Aster would ever consider making a comedy, the director replied with an enthusiastic: “Yes. And hopefully very soon.”

“Next one will either be a zonky nightmare comedy or a big, sickly domestic melodrama,” he added. “It might take me a few movies before I wind back around to [horror], but I love horror and I’m sure I’ll be back.”

Whether zonky comedy or sickly melodrama, Aster did promise to continue with at least one recurring theme:

Billy Eichner Wants More LGBT Characters So We Can Stop ‘Arguing About Bert and Ernie’

Billy Eichner Wants More LGBT Characters So We Can Stop ‘Arguing About Bert and Ernie’
Fans of “Billy on the Street” and “Difficult People” already know that Billy Eichner is one of the smartest and funniest men in show business, but his role in “The Lion King” will introduce the comedian to a whole new audience. Eichner voices the meerkat Timon, best friend to constant thorn in his side Pumbaa (Seth Rogen); crooner of such iconic songs as “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Hakuna Matata.” The character was famously originated by openly gay actor Nathan Lane, five years before coming out publicly in The Advocate in 1999. Eichner, who is also gay, recently spoke to Buzzfeed about taking on a role so defined by another actor.

“I’m glad that [director] Jon Favreau kept the tradition of Timon being played by a gay actor, with a certain type of comedic sensibility, alive,” Eichner said.

In the original “Lion King,” many people read antagonist Scar (Jeremy Irons

Stephen King Calls the Trump Presidency ‘Scarier’ Than Any of His Novels — Watch

Stephen King Calls the Trump Presidency ‘Scarier’ Than Any of His Novels — Watch
With “Midsommar” earning raves and performing well at the box office, horror has never been hotter. And if, as Justin Chang argued in the Los Angeles Times back in 2017, horror has become the defining genre of the Trump presidency, then Stephen King is its patron saint. The master of horror’s many works have seen renewed interest thanks to a slew of successful adaptations, from the box office record-breaker “It,” to its much-hyped follow-up “It: Chapter Two,” and many more projects currently in the works. And while the master of horror certainly is the king of scary set-ups, he says there’s one scenario so terrifying even he couldn’t improve upon it: Donald Trump’s presidency.

During an interview with NowThisNews, King laughed after being asked whether he thought the Trump presidency was scarier than one of his novels. “Short answer to that is, yes, I do. I do think it’s scarier,

‘The Proposal’: A Riveting Art World Portrait Of Control, Legacy & Obsession [Review]
The fascinating documentary, “The Proposal” begins, appropriately, with a proposition. Not one of marriage, as the title, suggests, but in the form of a letter that begs to see the hidden work of the late great Mexican architect Luis Barragán. And another entreaty while you are here: please, seek out this calm, poetic and profoundly meditative documentary if you want to be transported into a world of stillness.

‘West Side Story’ Shares First Look of Ariana DeBose as Anita

20th Century Fox released a first look image Saturday of actress Ariana DeBose in the role of Anita for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story.”

DeBose first rose to fame as a contestant on “So You Think You Can Dance,” before landing roles in Broadway shows such as Motown the Musical,” “Pippin,” “Hamilton” and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.” As Anita, DeBose plays the girlfriend of Bernardo, the leader of the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks who are at odds with the white American gang the Jets.

The new Spielberg film is a direct adaptation of the original Broadway musical of the same name, not a remake of the Robert Wise-directed 1961 film. In that project, Rita Moreno played the role of Anita, taking home an Oscar for best supporting actress; however, she will also return in Spielberg’s new film as Valentina in addition to serving as one

‘Zodiac’ & ‘Black Swan’ Producer’s Company Options Sex ‘TrafficKing’ Book About Jeffrey Epstein’s Criminal Case
It’s easy to get cynical when contemporary events and scandals in our day and age are quickly adapted for the big or small screen seemingly to capitalize on their hot-topic notoriety. You can be certain that, over the coming years, we’ll be hearing rumblings about projects depicting the Donald Trump presidency, #MeToo movement and Venezuela crisis—the 2010s have provided an endless amount of fodder for potential prestige vehicles.

Before all those, though, and in an especially timely manner, we’ll be getting a TV show about the life, times and alleged crimes of Jeffrey Epstein.

Greek Director Syllas Tzoumerkas on the Need for Defiance
Syllas Tzoumerkas, one of the filmmakers who formed part of the Greek New Wave, believes young filmmakers should remain defiant against norms and conformity when developing a film language unique to themselves.

Speaking during a masterclass at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival entitled “A Very Certain Defiance,” Tzoumerkas told his young audience, participants of European Film Promotion’s Future Frames program, “The word ‘defiance’ can create a path for you in surviving the film industry.”

The director, whose films include 2010 Venice Critics’ Week pic “Homeland,” 2014 Locarno competition film “A Blast,” and this year’s Berlin Panorama player “The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea,” advised them: “You are going to have to create a core – an inner strength – that is non-negotiable because this is what is going to feed you; this what is going to create content.”

He added: “Be defiant against all the sea of opinion, norms, conformity… be defiant against yourself.
