Jessica Jones season 3 revealed just what's been going on for the immortal Iron Fist after the cancellation of his own show. The partnership between Marvel Television and Netflix has come to an end, and Jessica Jones season 3 is the final installment. Although the show was already in production before the relationship between Marvel and Netflix began to sour, Marvel seem to have used it to wrap up as many loose ends as possible.
Daredevil season 3 had been the perfect conclusion for the Man Without Fear, with Daredevil's life coming full-circle. But the second seasons of both Luke Cage and Iron Fist had ended with cliffhangers setting up the next series, which made their cancellations more than a little problematic. Fortunately, Marvel was up to the task. A surprise cameo by Luke Cage neatly resolved his arc for now, and a single throwaway piece of dialogue gave viewers a much-needed update on Iron Fist as well.
Jessica Jones season 3 features an important subplot in which Jeri Hogarth's legal firm begins to fall apart after she's blamed for a man's suicide. Hogarth desperately attempts to reassure her clients, but to her fury, Rand Industries is successfully poached by the competition. When Hogarth challenges this, insisting that Danny Rand would never agree to this, she's told he's on a sabbatical of some kind.
This dovetails perfectly with Iron Fist season 2's ending, which saw Danny heading to Asia on a mission to learn the truth behind the legends of the Iron Fist. A scene set "months later" revealed that this quest would lead to his pursuing a man named Orson Randall, who was Danny's predecessor as the Iron Fist in the comics. What's more, Danny had evidently regained the ability to channel his Chi, even if he was choosing to do so through guns rather than just through his fist. According to Jessica Jones season 3, then, Danny is still on that quest roughly a year later.
In essence, Jessica Jones places both Luke Cage and Iron Fist in a sort of stasis, perhaps in the hopes Marvel TV will eventually be able to relaunch the franchises and pick up where they left off. It's a smart move on Marvel's part; the stories are loosely tied up, meaning they can be revisited should Marvel get the opportunity but don't feel unfinished if they don't. Unfortunately, there have been reports that a clause in the deal between Marvel and Netflix prevented Marvel from including the characters in new TV shows or films for two years after cancellation. That means the odds don't look particularly good, and Jessica Jones season 3 will probably be the last mention of the immortal Iron Fist in the wider MCU for the foreseeable future.
