Taylor & Francis Books Open Access is a new initiative that allows authors and their funders to publish open access (OA) single- or co-authored books and edited collections. Upon publication, Taylor & Francis Books Open Access titles are immediately made available in digital format to read and download freely under a Creative Commons license.
It is a project by our books division to complement our well-established Open Access publishing programme for our journals. It encompasses books in all subjects covered by Routledge in the humanities, social sciences and behavioural sciences as well as science, technology, engineering and medical titles published under our CRC Press imprint.
In establishing this programme, Taylor & Francis is responding to wider developments within the scholarly research community and to those scholars seeking innovative and alternative publishing models to the well-established and traditional formats. It is a service for our authors and those funders who wish to support open access publication.
Upon publication, your research monograph will be freely and immediately available online on the Taylor & Francis eBooks platform and clearly identified as ‘open access’. Readers will be able to read online or download a DRM-free PDF. A free eBook will also be available from commercial distributors such as Amazon.
Your book will be discoverable via key search engines such as Google Scholar and be accessible via the Taylor & Francis eBooks platform and we will also deposit a copy in the OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) online library. Taylor & Francis Books Open Access research monographs will benefit from the full support and global reach of Taylor & Francis’ sales and marketing departments.
Research suggests that Open Access content is far more likely to be downloaded and cited. This study found that OA book chapters are downloaded 7 times more than non-OA titles, were cited 50% more and mentioned online 10 times more.
Taylor & Francis Books Open Access titles are published under a Creative Commons license. Our preferred license is CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs). Under this license, others may download your work and share it as long as they credit you, but they can't change it in any way or use it commercially. The license also allows for text- and data-mining of your works.
But we are prepared to be flexible on the specifics of the Creative Commons license for your OA book based on funder and author needs. Contact your editor for more details.
You still retain intellectual copyright of your work whichever license is agreed.
All Taylor & Francis Books Open Access monographs are subject to our normal rigorous peer review to ensure academic quality and integrity.
All Taylor & Francis Books Open Access monographs go through exactly the same production process as other Taylor & Francis titles and benefit from the experience, attention to detail and professionalism of our staff.
There will be a freely available online version and a downloadable DRM-free PDF on the Taylor & Francis eBooks platform. A free eBook will be available from commercial distributors such as Amazon. For customers wanting a hard copy of the book, a print version will also be available for purchase.
