Here we go with ARIA Chart Watch, our regular weekly wrap of the ARIA top 100s.
And, we’re thrilled to say, it’s all about the Aussies on the charts this week, with the No.1 spots on both charts occupied by Aussie acts.
But which acts are (ahem) shepparding in this new love for home-grown music? Read on…
SINGLES
They’ve been shining brightly in the No.1 spot now for four weeks on the trot; they are, of course, our very own 5 Seconds Of Summer.
Everything seems to be falling into place for the boys at the right time; their single shining at No.1 on the ARIA singles chart as their new album of the same name drop. It’s a shoo-in for No.1 next week.
5SOS may still be performing strongly atop the ARIA singles chart, but so too is Post Malone, with ‘Better Now’ maintaining its No.2 position. Not only that, it’s the first of the new certifications this week; platinum for sales in excess of 70,000 units.
But Maroon 5 is on the move. Their new single ‘Girls Like You’ debuted handsomely in the No.5 spot last week and has climbed two spaces higher to No.3.
Selena Gomez is also on the up with ‘Back To You’, which now equals 2017’s ‘It Ain’t Me’ (with Kygo) as her biggest Aussie hit to date (No.7 to No.4).
Amy Shark’s ‘I Said Hi’ maintains its position at No.6 and bags a platinum certification this week. A platinum gong also for Ariana Grande’s ‘No Tears Left To Cry’, although it stumbles slightly from No.4 to No.7.
Its previous peak was No.10, so Anne-Marie will be thrilled to know that her latest single ‘2002’ this week takes up position well inside it (No.11 to No.8). Kanye edges from No.12 on debut to No.10 with ‘All Mine’.
Drake’s former No.1 hit ‘Nice For What’ is another single achieving a platinum accreditation this week. As is the Noah Kahan/Julia Michaels track ‘Hurt Somebody’, which improves from No.19 to No.14 on the back of Noah’s Australian promotional visit.
As it continues to do over in the UK, the Clean Bandit/Demi Lovato single ‘Solo’ is gaining momentum here in Australia. This week it rises eleven places to No.17.
Another platinum certification goes to Kygo’s track ‘Remind Me To Forget’, which is still hanging around the latter teens (No.18) having achieved no higher than No.14 in its 13 week run.
Dennis Lloyd’s ‘Nevermind’ is up five No.24 to No.19), Juice WRLD’s ‘Lucid Dreams’ is up seven (No.27 to No.20), but The Weeknd’s ‘Call Out My Name’ eases six to No.21.
Despite dropping 12 places in the last two weeks (only two this week), the Shawn Mendes single ‘In My Blood’ joins the platinum-bagging parade.
But it’s not just platinum gongs being handed out this week. Oh no. It’s also double platinum gongs. Case in point is Zedd & Grey’s ‘The Middle’, which is now double platinum for sales in excess of 140,000 units (No.23).
The Hayden James track ‘Just Friends’ continues to trend upwards, gaining another four places to No.26 this week.
And a little further down, the Post Malone single ‘Rockstar’ breaks through the five times platinum barrier, meaning that including downloads and streams, it’s now blasted through more than 350,000 units in Australia.
‘Yikes’! The Kanye West song that lobbed at No.18 on debut last week drops 15 in its second week.
But A$AP Rocky’s ‘Praise The Lord (Da Shine)’ is up (No.47 to No.34), as is the Peking Duk EP ‘Reprisal’ (No.52 to No.35); the latter making its first appearance in the ARIA top 50.
As with Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’ previously, it seems his label has been busy updating his certifications this week, because his former No.2 hit ‘I Fall Apart’ also gets a new one; and how. It blasts from triple platinum to five times platinum and is up five places to No.37.
Drake won’t be too upset that his ‘I’m Upset’ is up ten to No.38, but Ed Sheeran won’t be happier to find out that his latest single ‘Happier’ tumbles 14 to No.40.
We have debuts in the 40s from both NOTD ftg. Bia Miller’s ‘I Wanna Know’ (No.44) and from Kids See Ghosts’ ‘4th Dimension’ (No.46).
Vance Joy’s ‘Saturday Sun’ takes up position in the top 50 for the first time (No.54 to No.47), as does Jess Glynne’s ‘I’ll Be There’ (No.56 to No.48).
Beyond the walls of the top 50 this week are some songs ready to shake up the establishment.
Ruel’s ‘Dazed & Confused’ bullets 21 places to No.53, Conrad Sewell’s ‘Healing Hands’ enters at No.54 (despite a high profile performance on ‘The Voice’ last weekend and a subsequent top three placing on iTunes) and Kids See Ghosts score another top 100 debut with ‘Reborn’ (No.55).
That same duo (made up of Kanye West and Kid Cudi) see ‘Feel The Love’ debut at No.57.
But on his lonesome, Kanye’s album tracks are starting to struggle; ‘Wouldn’t Leave’ slumping 27 to No.60 and ‘Violent Crimes’ down 21 to No.61.
The Justin Timberlake/Chris Stapleton single ‘Say Something’ mightn’t have been the massive hit we thought it should have been, but it’s still done enough in its 20 weeks of ARIA chart action to achieve a fresh new double platinum accreditation (No.64).
Post Malone’s ‘Candy Paint’ also scores itself a lick of double platinum love this week (No.67).
Kendrick Lamar’s former No.2 hit ‘Humble’ quietly sails across the five times platinum hurdle (No.68) before Kids See Ghosts premiere with ‘Fire’ and ‘Freeee’ in positions 69 and 72 respectively.
Eminem and Ed Sheeran’s ‘The River’ is another track that’s seemingly been patiently waiting to have its certifications updated. And it occurs this week; the single jumping from platinum (70,000 units) to triple platinum (210,000 units).
We’ve for a debut for Tiesto’s ‘Jackie Chan’ at No.74, we have a platinum accreditation for The Weeknd’s ‘Pray For Me’ at No.77 and we’ve got a massive 40 place slump for Kanye West’s ‘I Thought About Killing You’ (No.41 to No.81).
Not good news either for Rüfüs Du Sol, whose single ‘No Place’ tumbles another 16 places to No.82.
Calum Scott’s ‘You Are The Reason’ was up from No.91 to No.58 last week. It’s down again to No.83 this week. But should be up again next week thanks to an upcoming performance on ‘The Voice’ grand final tomorrow night.
Kids See Ghosts score another top 100 debut (No.84 with ‘Kids See Ghosts’). But Kanye’s ‘No Mistakes’ plummets 40 to No.86.
There’s another Kids See Ghosts track at No.89 (‘Cudi Montage’), but a 30 place fall for Post Malone’s ‘Paranoid’ (No.60 to No.90).
Imagine Dragons’ ‘Believer’ shifts from platinum to triple platinum (No.91), Selena Gomez & Marshmello’s ‘Wolves’ is up from double platinum to triple platinum (No.92) and the new OneRepublic/Logic single ‘Start Again’ enters at No.95.
Rick The Kid’s ‘Plug Walk’ wraps the top 100 certifications this week with a gold one in position 97.
ALBUMS
Right… singles chart out of the way. Now onto the albums side of things.
And this week, it’s dominated by the all-conquering Sheppard.
This position will be super-sweet for the Brisbane band, who’ve pulled out all the stops across the past week to ensure they’ve done everything within their power to nab a No.1 album with their sophomore set ‘Watching The Sky’.
And, after their 2014 debut album ‘Bombs Away’ peaked at No.2, they’ve finally achieved their coveted No.1.
Post Malone and ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack are steady in positions two and three, ahead of a No.4 debut for the Kids See Ghosts album.
Kanye’s ‘Ye’ tumbles from No.1 on debut to No.6, while the new Lily Allen album ‘No Shame’ premieres at a respectable No.8, mirroring its debut on the UK chart overnight.
Debuting in the teens this week are Jorja Smith’s ‘Lost & Found’ (No.13) and Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Hopelessly Devoted : The Hits’ (No.14).
Luke Combs’ album ‘This One’s For You’ is down (No.8 to No.19), but Vance Joy’s ‘Nation Of Two’ (No.26 to No.20), P!nk’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’ (No.29 to No.22), Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ (No.33 to No.23), the ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2’ soundtrack (No.38 to No.25) and XXXTentation’s ‘?’ (No.37 to No.26) are all up.
The ‘Moana’ soundtrack continues to enjoy a top 50 berth, up 16 places to No.28. The Hillsong Worship album ‘There Is More’ also climbs (No.47 to No.31).
‘The Very Best of INXS’ pops its head back into the ARIA top 50 (No.52 to No.36). It’s just ahead of a No.37 debut for the new Beach Boys album ‘The Beach Boys With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’.
The Ten Tenors’ ‘Wish You Were Here’ is back in the top 100 mix (No.40).
Five Finger Death Punch’s ‘And Justice For None’, however, is headed in the opposite direction, tumbling 21 to No.41.
A$AP Rocky’s ‘Testing’ is also on the way out this week losing 23 places to No.44.
But the ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ soundtrack leaps into action (and back into the top 50) from No.66 to No.45.
The news isn’t crash hot for Chvrches, who see their album ‘Love Is Dead’ slump 38 places in week three to No.50.
Niall Horan’s ‘Flicker’ flickers out of the top 50 (No.28 to No.53), as does Gang Of Youths’ ‘Go Farther In Lightness’ (No.41 to No.57).
Dierks Bentley debuts in the No.58 position with ‘The Mountain’ and Sugarland are in at No.64 with ‘Bigger’.
But some big drops follow, none more so than that for Ghost’s album ‘Prequelle’. It was shining brightly at No.7 on debut last week, but plunges to No.69 in week two. Pusha T’s ‘Daytona’ has also run its top 50 race, plummeting 51 places to No.73.
Tremonti is in the middle of the two, with a No.71 debut for ‘A Dying Machine’.
Xavier Rudd can’t escape the album cascade; his new album ‘Storm Boy’ joining the slide, down 46 places to No.77.
It’s judt ahead of a No.78 debut for Lykke Li’s ‘So Sad So Sexy’ and a 40 place slump for Courtney Barnett’s ‘Tell Me How You Really Feel’ (No.40 to No.80).
Megadeth’s ‘Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good : The Final Kill’ is new at No.84, Lauv’s ‘I Met You When I Was 18’ loses 21 places from last week’s No.65 debut and Delta Goodrem’s ‘I Honestly Love You’ is pretty much over and out, dropping 38 places to No.96.
But the biggest drop of all this week comes courtesy of the Father John Misty album ‘God’s Favourite Customer’. It debuted at No.9 last week and has lost more than 91 positions in week two to be gone entirely from the ARIA top 100.
