Research, Innovation and Commercial Engagement
RIC has recruited a team of entrepreneurs, CEOs and senior industry professionals to lead the University’s business development operations.
Embedded within each faculty, Business Development Directors provide our academic and administrative leadership with commercial advice and support in
the pursuit of their strategic plans. Business Development Directors manage the full range of internal and external clients. Specifically, they focus on the generation of new research income through the:
- identification, establishment and management of commercial relationships;
- translation and commercialisation of intellectual property; and
- design and development of custom education programs for external customers.
Further supporting these activities are business development managers, business project support, tender preparation, proposal support, grant writing and technology licensing professionals, together comprising a comprehensive Business Development team. Working with each faculty, the Business Development team seeks to expand research income through domestic and international grants, revenues from contract research and industry collaboration, consultancy fees and major public and private sector tenders.

Technologies with commercial potential are identified by the faculty's Business Development team, who then facilitates an introduction to the IP & Technology Transfer team.
The IP & Technology Transfer team helps the University's academic community protect and commercialise intellectual property (IP). The team will work with academics to assess commercialisation pathways arising from the research and seek appropriate commercial partners, while also providing support and advice with regard to IP rights and management.
The Business Development Managers will work collaboratively with academics to submit an IP Disclosure. Once a disclosure has been submitted, the IP & Technology Transfer team will work with and support the discloser by:
- providing guidance on the technology commercialisation assessment and licensing process;
- providing advice on the ownership of IP and the University’s IP policy;
- determining suitable IP protection; and
- seeking relevant industry partners and establishing appropriate arrangements to commercialise technology.
Similarly, the IP & Technology Transfer team will support academics by:
- providing guidance on drafting patent specifications;
- administering licensing arrangements and IP assignments; and
- distributing royalties and commercial revenue.
