As the threat of imprisonment for those seeking refuge in the United States increases with every stroke of President Trump’s pen, Human Rights First launched the Freedom for Detained Refugees Project with a simple goal: End the cruel and inhumane detention of the courageous men, women, and children who seek to live in safety in the United States.

Those brave enough to flee their homes and seek safety for themselves and their families in America follow in the footsteps of generations of refugees who have made our country flourish.

People fleeing for their lives should be offered refuge by the United States; NOT be left to languish behind bars.

The Freedom for Detained Refugees Project works to ensure asylum seekers have access to the resources they need to navigate an already complex process through:

Representation

We are partnering with law firms and non-profit organizations across the country to provide free, full-scale representation of asylum seekers in three detention facilities.

Litigation

In partnership with ACLU, the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, and Covington & Burling LLP, we are challenging the Trump Administration’s denial of parole for asylum seekers.

Advocacy

We are leading the effort to demand congressional oversight and pressure policymakers to change laws to protect asylum seekers from incarceration.

President Trump’s attempt to paint peaceful families seeking asylum as a national security threat is as absurd as it is cruel.

And those detained by his Administration’s brutal policies often endure inhumane treatment, jail-like conditions, sexual assault, insufficient medical care, and a total lack of the due process to which they are entitled.

We cannot allow hate and fear-mongering to undermine what our country stands for. America must continue to be a place of refuge for the persecuted, and its respect for human rights an example and inspiration for the world.
