Asian Collections Reading Room

The Asian Collections Reading Room on the Third Floor provides access to the Library's collection of Asian language books, journals, electronic resources and databases. Asian languages covered include: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Lao, Burmese, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan. Some Asian language electronic resources are also accessible from the Main Reading Room.

In the Asian Collections Reading Room visitors will also find:

  • selected current magazines in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese and Thai
  • the latest two months of newspapers in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai
  • significant scholarly formed collections in Western languages on Asia
  • print, scan and photocopying facilities.

Indonesian language materials are available through the Main Reading Room. Non-Asian language materials about Asia are generally available through the Main Reading Room.

You are welcome to bring handbags or small day bags (under 300mm square) and clear water bottles into the reading room. Food, large bags, coats, umbrellas and other large objects can be stored in our free self-service lockers on Lower Ground 1. Please do not leave personal possessions or bags unattended in the reading room. For the safety of our patrons unattended items may be inspected and removed by authorised officers of the Library.   

The Asian Collections Reading Room is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm. After-hours access to Asian collection material may be possible, through the Special Collections Reading Room, by prior arrangement with Asian Collections staff.
