This JCU Master’s degree is for you if you're a graduate and ready to develop your career in a rehabilitation-related area of healthcare. As with other JCU healthcare courses, choosing this Master’s degree will give you unique opportunities and experience, especially in tropical, rural, remote, regional community and Indigenous health in Australia and internationally.

• With JCU's General Major in Rehabilitation, you'll achieve an important qualification that will enable you to take the next steps in your career. Your additional therapeutic qualifications and skillset will equip you to apply for roles where you're required to deliver high-level skills to assist individuals in overcoming illnesses and injuries that impact on clients' ability to participate in daily life.
• JCU's Occupational Therapy major will be valued by employers or in your own practice. With its specialisation in rehabilitation, your Master’s degree will add significantly to your ability to assist individuals in overcoming illnesses and injuries which impair daily living activities.
• If you're ready to advance your Physiotherapy career, choosing this major with its specialisation in rehabilitation will equip you for roles where you're responsible for assisting individuals at an advanced level to overcome mobility-impairing illnesses and injuries.
• Speech Pathology graduates - this JCU Master’s degree will enable you to achieve a qualification that will help you advance your career to new levels. You'll gain advanced skills that will equip you to assist individuals of all ages to overcome communication and swallowing-related illnesses and injuries.

The JCU Master of Rehabilitation is designed so you can study externally/online while you continue to work. It is a 1.5 year full-time (or part-time equivalent) external course that's available to Australian and international students. Australian students are required to participate in limited on-campus study and Work Integrated Learning. You'll benefit from:

• Studying highly practical topics and approaches that can help assist you achieve tangible outcomes to implement in your clinical setting
• Opportunities to meet with your lecturers and fellow students, in some subjects, to address healthcare via face-to-face teaching and Work Integrated Learning within the clinical environment at the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine on campus in Townsville
• The opportunity to learn from JCU's internationally-recognised lecturers
• Unique opportunities to focus on issues that address tropical, Indigenous, rural and remote practice.

You will begin your JCU Master degree studying Rehabilitation for Chronic Conditions, Rehabilitation Research and Evidence Based Practice, and Cultural Competency Principles in Australian Healthcare Practice. From here, you will have the opportunity to branch off into specific majors including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology and the brand new JCU General Major in Rehabilitation.

You can choose from two streams: Coursework, or coursework and research. If this course is to be used as your pathway to enrolment in a PhD, you will need to complete the coursework/research stream. Subjects to choose from include:

• Rehabilitation for Disability Across the Lifespan
• Rehabilitation for Chronic Conditions
• Palliative Care for Allied Health Professionals
• Assistive Technology Strategies to Enable Personal Autonomy
• Research 1: A literature Review
• Research 2: A Research Project.

You'll also be able to choose area-specific subjects that enable you to develop your expertise in the areas that especially interest you.

Professional recognition

Completion of the JCU Master of Rehabilitation will not enable Australian registration as a health professional.

Enrolment requirements

Enrolment in the General Major requires a degree in a relevant health-related subject. Completion of a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Speech Pathology at an Australian university or an equivalent international entry level qualification is required to apply for the corresponding major. For example Occupational Therapy major, requires completion of a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.
