The National Library collects pictorial material in order to document significant people, places and events in Australian history and society.   Formats include photographs, prints, drawings and cartoons. 

Catalogue search tips

In addition to using the name of an artist or photographer to find pictorial material in our catalogue, the Browse Subjects option can also be used.  Some examples of useful subject headings include:

  • Federation Australia celebrations
  • Federal parliament 1901

 Use the 'Add limits' drop down menu to restrict your search to Pictures or National Library digitised material.
