Tips for exam success
There are a number of ways you can prepare for your exams. Here are some tips to help you prepare, study, stay focused and succeed.
What kind of exam?
Exams can take several forms including multiple choice, short answer, essay style, open book, or combinations of these. It’s your responsibility to find out as much information as you can about your exam from your lecturer. Valuable information is often communicated in the final lecture or tutorial.
The Learning Centre has guides on how to prepare for each type of exam.
Past exam papers
Test yourself on some past exam papers for your subjects. They are available for most subjects via the Library’s Reserve Online Basic Search.
Work through these past exam papers under exam conditions – set yourself a time limit and don’t use notes and textbooks. This gives you valuable exam practice and helps highlight areas needing revision.
You can also use previously worked examples and old assessment items as practice.
Develop your study, revision and time management skills
Online modules and tips
- Be proactive, organise your information and identify gaps in your knowledge - follow the '4-week guide to nailing your exams'.
- The Learning Centre's exam preparation resources will help you prepare for exams, including information about different types of exams, how to prepare during the semester, minimise stress during the exam period, and what to do on the day of your exam.
- See Getting Started for tips on organising and prioritising your time, creating your own weekly and semester study plans, and active learning strategies.
