Riverdale Trainer Reveals Workouts That Help Prep the Guys for Their Countless Shirtless Scenes
To get six-pack abs like Riverdale stars KJ Apa and Charles Melton, their trainer says commitment is key.
Along with Apa, 21, and Melton, 28, celebrity trainer Alex Fine also works with the show’s Cole Sprouse, Mark Consuelos, Casey Cott and Hart Denton, who are put through two workouts a day.
Fine, who has partnered with Premier Protein, tells PEOPLE they will do 45 minutes of cardio in the morning and another hour session in the afternoon focusing on weight lifting.
“Their cardio is usually sprinting on the treadmill and the afternoon is mostly body weight workouts,” Fine says. “Pull-ups, push-ups, and about 10 to 15 minutes of abs everyday.”
Fine says when one of the cast members has a shirtless scene coming up, they will even bump the workouts up to three times a day. The third session consists of something different like pilates or boxing.
“For the person that doesn’t have that kind of time, you can get enough out of it with a 45-minute workout in the morning,” Fine says. “It’s totally fine, it’s just, they look like that for a reason. All of them are in extremely great shape.”
When Fine started working with Denton, who plays Betty’s estranged brother on the show, he was new to working out and wanted to get into better shape.
Fine posted a photo on Instagram, showing off his progress one month after starting training.
“The reason why he was a huge success in that amount of time is he took it very seriously, and he was consistent,” Fine says. “I don’t think he missed a day, and he did two workouts a day. I know he worked out with me and then he’d do a boxing class.”
Fine says the guys on Riverdale “want to look as ripped as possible.”
“It’s difficult,” he says. “Every one of them works extremely hard. A lot of people make the excuse that they don’t have enough time in the day to workout. You have enough time for anything if you make it. Go to bed an hour earlier so you can wake up an hour earlier. A lot of these guys who come on the show work long days for a month at a time, but they make time for exercise as well.”
