In the first half of 2017 there were 94 new entries. This year, only 82. In total we saw 129 songs in the Top 40 compared to 138 last year. The chart is not kind to kiwi artists either and hasn't been now for three years. This year there were only two new local singles with 5 songs in total in the chart. By comparison, last year saw 4 new and 6 in total and in 2016 one new and two in total. To compare that to 2006, a random year I picked, 21 local tracks graced the Top 40 in the first six months, 16 of them new entries. Something needs to change. Final interesting point. The number one last year for the half yearly best of chart was Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran. He does it again this year, this time with Perfect which actually started it's chart life well over a year ago.

Kiwis had another bad year in the Singles chart listing only three new songs in the weekly survey. Compare that to next years 14 looks bad for the local market. By years end there had been a total of 172 new singles enter the Top 40. Compared to last year that number made a big jump from 154 but that was helped by the final 2018 chart which featured 14 new entries brought on by the Christmas market. It was also the 53rd chart for the year giving us one extra chart. This years number one, based on points, was the 8th hit single for Australian boy band 5 Seconds Of Summer with their four week number one Youngblood.

Chart Beat - Annual Report

From the very first chart of 2018 it was clear this was to be a very different year in the charts. That chart was splattered with festive singles. two, from Brenda Lee and John Lennon, had been released decades ago. That same trend was amplified in the final chart for the year with 24 of the top 40 devoted to Christmas some dating back to the 50’s and as far back as 1942.
The oddities didn’t just belong to the silly season though. J. Cole, Drake, Eminem, Post Malone, Travis Scott, The weeknd, and Xxxtentacion all featured multiple tracks entering the chart in the same week, often with a single one week stay.
Kiwis had a terrible year with the trend still moving down for new entries. Only three new singles and 37 new albums entered the chart. For singles that’s the worst year in the chart for its 43 year history.
Another surprise statistic came from the singles chart. The average length of a song was down to 3 minutes 29 seconds being the shortest in the charts history. To beat that you have to go back to the early 70s when the New Zealand Listener Chart was in play.
With it taking up to 15 people to write some of the shorter songs it makes you wonder about the state of the industry.
For years Pink Floyd had the honour of having they only album - Dark Side Of The Moon - to reach the 200 week mark. Now we have four and two achieved the landmark this year. Ed Sheehan with his second album X reached 227 weeks whilst kiwis Six60 took Six60(2) to 200 weeks. Both were done consecutively, something Pink Floyd didn’t do.
One more big achievement was the second soundtrack for A Star Is Born. The original spent nine weeks at the top in 1976 for Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristopherson. The remake starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper finished the year on 12 weeks and went to 3rd place in the first week of 2019 behind Grease and Saturday Night Fever from 1978 for the most weeks at the top for a soundtrack.
