HISTORICAL MOORING :
The department of Sociology took its birth in 1989 under the headship of Dr. Rabindra Kumar Mohanty, assisted by Dr. Soubhagya Laxmi Saran with 16 number of students. Time and again, the spirit and dedication of the teachers had uplifted the department to a remarkable height.
In 2001, one teaching post of the department was officially allotted for newly created B.J.B. (Jr.) college due to the structural modification that took place under changed educational policy of the Govt. As a result, the department of Sociology of B.J.B. (Auto.) college is now running under a single teacher and with 120 students of the department. To meet the academic requirements of the department, a guest lecturer has also been engaged.

NEWLY INTRODUCED CBCS SYLLABUS:
Sociology, a science of society is a very vast and complex subject in the stream of humanities. In this academic session 2015-16, a new course structure Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced in the department of sociology to give an opportunity to the students to gain better understanding of the subject. The present syllabus under CBCS pattern spread over 18 papers in the place of 8 papers of traditional course. The course structure has been designed in such a way that it helps the students to get acquainted with the newly emerging issues and concepts of the time. At the same time, it helps to develop an in-depth idea on the basic concepts and fundamental research techniques in the study of Sociology.
Learning Outcomes:
This present course structure of Sociology under CBCS pattern is expected to enlighten students with the depth of Sociological knowledge. So that it would enable students to get admission in various national level reputed institutions. It aims to present a comprehensive, integrated and an empirical study of various social facts and theories to gain better understanding on the subject and that may help students to compete in the various national and state level examinations.

Research Project / Articles-
An ongoing UGC research project on the title “New Religious Movement” is on progress under the guidance of Rubi Sain, HOD, Department of Sociology of Religion, Yadavpur University, West Bengal. Till now, six modules have been prepared and submitted.
An article on “Opportunities, Access and Challanges to Higher Education for the Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)” has been accepted by the public Administration Department, Utkal University to be published in their edited book.
A paper “Integral Yoga and the Spirit of Work in Auroville”,presented in the international conference, held at Jadavpur University, Kolkata has been accepted to be published in their edited book.
Other two articles “Gender Construction and its Reflection in the Media: A Study on Private Odia Satellite Channels” and “Social Perception to Mental Depression: A Study among the Young Depression Patients of Bhubaneswar City” are under progress.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT
Teaching is the main activity of the department. At present, there are 122 honors students and 137 elective students in the department. Along with class-room teaching, other learning methods through seminars, group discussion, and extra-mural lecturers have been organized time to time for student’s intellectual growth.
Seminars / Group Discussions:
Every Wednesday of the normal working day, either seminar or group discussion for students are organized on the scheduled time as per the college time table. Students from 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year Sociology honors participate in these activities.
During 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic session, the department has organized some special seminars or extra-mural lecturers with the help of reputed academicians, alumina of the department and some eminent persons along with routine- student seminars. Dr. Santosh Rath, Rtd. Reader in Sociology had addressed the student’s seminar on the topic “Gender issues and women empowerment in India” on 03/09/2014 and the distinguished alumina of the Sociology department Smt. Amrita Dash, DCP, Headquarter, Commissionerate of Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack had presented a talk on “women in public service: challenges and opportunities” on 18/03/2015.
On the eve of the annual function of the department, a special seminar was organized on 21/03/2015. Sj. Pravakar Mishra, an eminent speaker of Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga and also a motivational speaker had delivered a talk on “Relevance of Spirituality in Contemporary Society”.
In the present academic session, a special seminar on Criminology has been successfully conducted on 23/09/2015. The chief speaker Prof. Samarendra Mohanty, retired Professor from Sambalpur University has delivered a talk on the topic “Problems in the rehabilitation of released prisoners”. Honors students of all three batches have actively participated in the seminar with large numbers.
Annual Seminar of the department was organized on 02/04/2016. The chief speaker of the event, Sjt. Nilambar Rath, founder and editor-in-chief of the first digital website on Odisha, Odisha Live delivered his talk on “Role of Media in Social Development”. The seminar was successful with the presence of students and teachers from other department who delivered and discussed on the topic in the interaction session.

Role of Media in Social development |
Seminar Library: Department has a Seminar Library comprising 307 no. of reference books, journals and magazines. Every day, students of the department use it according to their convenience. Mostly the library remains open from 2.30pm onwards.
Library has also maintained a file of old and new question papers of reputed institutions to help students in preparing P.G. entrance for various national level reputed institutions.
Debate and Essay Competitions:
On the eve of “National Unity Day”, department had organized debate and essay competitions among the students of the department on 31st October, 2014 and also distributed prizes to the winners.
Awareness programme :
Staffs and Students have taken pledge on Vigilance Awareness Day on 27/10/2014 and organized a special seminar on “prevention of corruption”. Students and staffs have also taken pledge on the eve of “National Unity day” on 31/10/2014 and participated in the event of ‘Run for Unity’.
Student – record Register :
A register is maintained by the department to keep all important records of the students which include their address details with the contact no. of their parents. It helps to contact a student easily and bring them under the notice of the department at the time of need.
Parent – Teacher meetings:
Parent – Teacher meetings for three honors batches were held in the months of September – October, 2015 to discuss about the personal problems of students, their attendance and academic performance. Effort of the department was highly appreciated by the parents and they also showed their concern to cooperate in the academic progress of the department.
Study Tour: Department of Sociology had visited Banki-Charchika on a study-tour in the month of January, 2015 with the help of some teachers of Odia Department. All the teachers and students of the Sociology department had joined in the study-tour. In the month of January, 2016 the Department has visited Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri on study tour with the teachers and students of the department.
Cultural Activities:
To strengthen intra-departmental relations among the senior and junior students, and to enhance the bond between teachers and students, some cultural activities have been carried out by the students of the department going beyond the formal class-room interaction.
Activities like ‘welcome to freshers’, ‘farewell to seniors’ and the celebration of ‘Teachers’ Day’ have been successfully organized by the students of the Department.
Other activities:
A register for student’s record is maintained by the department where the details of every student with contact number and address is included. With the help of the register, parents of the absentee students, who continuously remain absent without information are made to contact through telephonic parent-teacher conversation.

Most of the pass-out students of the department are pursuing their post-graduation in various universities inside and outside of the state. Some of them have joined in various services like armed force, state mass education, NGOs. and in other professional courses such as mountaineering training etc.
