CHENNAI: Saturday and Sunday were pleasant days in Chennai thanks to cloudy skies and strong wind caused by a weather system -- cyclone Phethai -- over the Bay of Bengal. But the city didn’t receive rain on both days.
Weathermen say Chennai is likely to get light to moderate rain on Sunday night and Monday because of the effect of cyclone Phethai which is edging closer to Andhra Pradesh coast.
The India Meteorological Department said on Sunday afternoon that the cyclonic storm had moved further north-northwest with a speed of 16kmph and was situated 430km southeast of Chennai and 560km southeast of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
It is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and cross Andhra coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada on Monday afternoon.
Since the system is moving away, Chennai is not expected to get heavy rain.
The forecast for the city for the next 24 hours is that “the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur. Surface wind will be strong and gusty at times.”
The IMD said the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city might be around 27 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius, respectively.
