Chandrakumari will be a grand, new experience for everyone : Radikaa
Back when I’d finished Chithi, I remember a reporter asking me, ‘This is the ultimate of what you have done. Do you think you can do any other role?’ I said, ‘We’ll wait and see’. I’m glad that I’ve come up with different roles after that — from Arasi to Annamalai to Chellamey to Vani Rani and today’s Chandrakumari,” begins Radikaa Sarathkumar, who continues to dominate the Tamil television scene.
The past six years, she entertained everyone with Vani Rani, which, with 1743 episodes, turned out to be one of the longest soap operas on Indian television. And the actress-producer is thrilled at how good the journey has been. “I never expected it. I’d travelled with the show for six years. Even today, wherever I go now, people ask when they are going to see the sisters again. That is the real success of the show in terms of content. I’m glad all of us could manage to pull this off,” she says.

She calls acting as Vani and Rani as the most challenging in her illustrious career, which has spanned a remarkable 40 years. “In films, when you play a dual role, you have the time to learn and do the role. But in TV, you don’t have the time factor. You have to be on your toes, remember every single scene, dialogue… Since I was running the production as well as the creative side, it was very, very challenging to do both these roles,” she explains. But she says that it was relief that she felt when the show ended. “I was balancing too many things. I was doing this show, movies, Chandrakumari… I was working day and night. So, to me, it was a relief.”

However, she reveals that the show will continue, albeit, on a different platform. “There have been so many mails and requests on the digital medium, where people have been telling us that they don’t want to see Vani Rani coming to an end, so we are going to continue Rani, by popular demand on YouTube,” she informs and adds that this move could be considered as her stepping into the streaming medium.

Radikaa has also moved on to a bigger challenger with her new serial Chandrakumari, in which she will be playing seven roles! “It is said that we all have seven janmas. We have held on to that concept,” she reveals and adds that while the story was interesting and something new for television, getting the project launched was a humongous task. “It was a lot of work and effort, but now, we have completed a week of telecast,” she beams and adds, “Chandrakumari will be a grand, new experience for everyone.”

The actress is also collaborating with senior director Suresh Krissna for the first time. “For this sort of epic with grandeur and graphics, we thought Suresh would be great. When I spoke to him, he was working on something else, but I told him which portion I wanted him to direct and he was so willing. It was such a pleasure to work with him, especially because we never got to work together in films. He is so professional and knows his work. And he also knows TV. That’s a real plus. When you go to the set, you know you have a director who knows his job and would take care of everything. That’s the real pleasure of working with him,” she praises.
