When composers and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman won the opportunity to create new songs for a “Mary Poppins Returns,” it wasn’t all celebration.

“We heard we were up for it, and we were ravenous to do it, and yet petrified at the same time,” Shaiman told Variety‘s Marc Malkin on Thursday at the movie’s red carpet premiere in Hollywood. “It’s very scary, and believe me I won’t be reading under any of the comments sections of anything having to do with our songs.”

Looking at the film’s legacy, it’s easy to see where Shaiman’s trepidation come from. The original “Mary Poppins” received 13 Oscar nominations and five wins, one of which was for Best Original Music Score.

‘SNL': Alec Baldwin’s Trump Channels ‘Evita’ and Mopes About Putin’s Bro-Down With Mbs
During the cold open of the first “Saturday Night Live” of December, Alec Baldwin returned as a very mopey Donald Trump, who is sad about his growing legal problems — but also how Vladimir Putin seems to have a new Bff in Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Also, Baldwin made a joke at his own expense about being accused of punching someone over a parking space a month ago.

The sketch saw Baldwin’s Trump taking a break from this weekend’s G20 summit in Argentina by stepping out onto his hotel room balcony to mope about this week’s crazy developments. He started, of course, by fretting about how the Mueller investigation has heated up this week.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Flops in China With 8th Place Box Office Debut

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Flops in China With 8th Place Box Office Debut
Hollywood’s racial diversity triumph, “Crazy Rich Asians” will be lucky to score more than $1 million in its opening weekend at the China box office.

Afternoon attendances on Friday had ranked the romantic comedy in fourth position. But by the evening it became apparent that mainstream Chinese audiences’ interest was barely flickering for a U.S. social phenomenon that has few stars of significance in China, and which was served up several months after the rest of the world.

Estimates from local sources point to the import opening only in eighth place over the weekend, with a performance far behind Chinese-made “A Cool Fish,” and still-potent “Venom.” “Asians“ earned some $410,000 on Friday and $400,000 on Saturday.

As the extent of the disappointment became apparent, exhibitors quickly stripped away screens. The number of screenings per day for “Crazy Rich Asians” was some 32,000 on Friday. That was slashed by 43% on Saturday to 18,700. Large

Robert De Niro Bashes American Politics, Celebrates Diversity During Marrakech Tribute
Robert De Niro fought back tears as he accepted his honorary award at Marrakech Film Festival from Martin Scorsese, whom he called his “friend, lifelong collaborator” and “one of the greatest blessings of (his) life.”

De Niro went on to draw parallels between his own Tribeca Film Festival and Marrakech Film Festival, both of which were born in 2001, “in the shadow of the tragic events of September 11” and have always strived to bring people together and – in the case of Marrakech fest – “serve as an inter-cultural bridge between nations.”

The Oscar-winning actor concluded his speech with a stringent criticism towards the current U.S. government.

“Sadly, in my country, we’re going through a period of grotesque version of nationalism. Not the kind of nationalism where we celebrate the quality and character of our diverse population; but rather a diabolic form of nationalism marked by greed, xenophobia and selfishness under the banner of ‘America First,

Cannes Director Thierry Fremaux Touts "Improvements" to Screening Schedule

Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux is saying the festival will make some adjustments to the press and premiere screening schedule after some negative feedback earlier this year.

“We had some complaints and we are going to improve on that,” he said at the Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday, without specifying what those changes might be. Last May, the festival changed the screening schedule so that media was not able to see films before their world premieres. It was an effort to protect directors from possible bad press published early, but led to some stressed-out critics.

Once a prolific tweeter,...
