This month is the 45th anniversary of the release of “Enter the Dragon,” the film that was supposed to be the breakout hit that would make Bruce Lee a Hollywood star. And it did — except that Lee had died the month before, on July 20, 1973.

The San Francisco-born Lee, who appeared briefly in the American public’s consciousness in the 1960s as Kato in the TV series “The Green Hornet,” had gone to Hong Kong to become a leading man and made three films there.

“Enter the Dragon” also assembled American action stars Jim Kelly and John Saxon, but Lee was clearly the charismatic star. It screens at the Balboa Theatre in San Francisco with the 1978 Hong Kong martial arts classic “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.”
