Michael B. Jordan Being Considered For Superman

Michael B. Jordan Being Considered For Superman
As we just reported, it appears that the man with the reloading arms, Henry Cavill, is out as the Big Blue Boyscout, aka Superman. While it’s not set in stone, as the Ben Affleck out as Batman is still not official, it looks like Warner Bros. and DC Films is going in a different direction after their first phase of DCEU films failed to catch on.

Henry Cavill Out as Superman Amid Warner Bros.' DC Universe Shake-Up (Exclusive)

Henry Cavill Out as Superman Amid Warner Bros.' DC Universe Shake-Up (Exclusive)
The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing its Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Though neither side is confirming, the British actor, who first donned the blue suit for 2013's Man of Steel, and then starred in 2016's Batman v. Superman and last year's Justice League, is said to be hanging up the red cape.

Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill, who most recently co-starred in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.

That's because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.

Furthermore, Warners isn't likely to make a solo Superman film for at least several years, according to another source. "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," says a studio source. As such, Cavill will join Ben Affleck, who isn't expected to reprise his role for director Matt Reeves' forthcoming Batman stand-alone film, as a hero on the way out.

A Warners source says the Shazam! deal fell apart because of scheduling conflicts. And that is backed up by the fact that Cavill recently signed on to star in the Netflix series The Witcher. However, another source says that the Witcher commitment came after the Warners impasse, suggesting a change in Warners' strategy.

"There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work," says the studio insider. Another source says Warners is trying to hit a "reset" button with the DC universe, steering its ship slowly into another direction.

While Affleck and Cavill are segueing out, others who were seen together onscreen in Justice League are carrying forward. Gal Gadot is returning for Wonder Woman 1984, to hit theaters in November 2019. Jason Momoa headlines a solo Aquaman movie this December. And Ezra Miller remains on board to star in a Flash movie, which is due to shoot in early 2019.

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara and chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group Toby Emmerich are looking to reinvigorate the studio's DC Universe, which is still playing second fiddle to the Marvel Universe in terms of box office and critical acclaim. Just six years ago, when The Dark Knight Rises closed out the Christopher Nolan trilogy, DC was the superhero team with the mojo. But so far, only Patty JenkinsWonder Woman spinoff has lived up to the promise of the franchise.

What Warners hasn't done is wiped the slate clean in one fell swoop, something that is nigh impossible to do given the years of planning that goes into these films. When asked about the studio Sept. 6 at an investor conference, new WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey said, "Hats off to Kevin and Toby and their team." But he also took a shot at DC. "Some of our franchises, in particular at DC, we all think we can do better."

‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Takes Twitter Hiatus Over Diverse Casting Backlash

  • The Wrap
Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner of Netflix’s adaptation of “The Witcher,” announced this week that she’d be taking a break from Twitter this week as her show has come under fire for some of its potential casting choices.

“It’s time for a Twitter hiatus,” Hissrich wrote in a tweet on Monday. “The love here is amazing, and the hate is enlightening, like a real-life Trial of the Grasses, except I Have to read less and write more — or we won’t have a damn finale. Be back soon with more insight and more Roach. Be nice to each other, okay?”

The Witcher,” which recently cast “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” star Henry Cavill in a central role, has received some backlash from fans who were upset by the idea that a character from the original novel/video game series would be played by a non-white character.

We Have No Idea What’s Going On in ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’

(Spoilers ahead for the premiere of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” on FX)

It’s “American Horror Story,” so I guess we should have expected the first episode of “Apocalypse” to be weird and confusing, but this one feels particularly obtuse. That’s not a criticism — just a note about how extra-weird this season is shaping up to be.

Here’s what we know about the situation in “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” so far:

1. There was an actual nuclear apocalypse that went down to kick things off. This doesn’t appear to be some kind of con to trick people into locking themselves in the outposts. There were news reports, and we even saw one of the bombs go off in Los Angeles.

Never fear, Outpost 3 — Mr. Langdon is here! Wait, who?

In the final moments of the “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” premiere, Ryan Murphy fans were reintroduced to “Assassination of Gianni Versace” star Cody Fern in his debut “Ahs” role as Langdon, a man with epic hair who has come to save Wilhelmina Venable (Sarah Paulson) and the other survivors in her nuclear shelter. Well, not all of them, just those he deems worthy after examination. Devilish, no?

TV Review: ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’

TV Review: ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’
In the first episode of its new season, “American Horror Story” made a case for itself, once again, as a series designed to make us our greatest fears, even if the cure it provides at the end of the journey is merely witty distraction.

Caution is warranted: The previous season, subtitled “Cult,” had seemed in its early going like a sharp and shrewd comment on the collapse of mutual trust among Americans in the aftermath of the 2016 election, before collapsing itself. But the early going of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” was, if nothing else, made with clever timing to confront

Henry Cavill Trolls Instagram With Weird (and Hilarious) Superman-Themed Video
Looks like Henry Cavill finally decided to weigh in on reports that he’s no longer playing Superman in Warner Bros.DC Comics movies… by trolling his fans on Instagram with a video that illuminates absolutely nothing.

Earlier Wednesday, individuals with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap that Cavill will no longer play Superman in any upcoming DC films, including the previously-announced cameo in “Shazam!” as Warner Bros. is shifting focus to a standalone “Supergirl” movie.

WB for its part says it has made no decisions about the future of Superman in its DC universe films. And Cavill’s reps did not respond to a request for comment from TheWrap. But late Wednesday afternoon, Cavill posted the clip, bearing the caption “Today was exciting #Superman,” that basically blows a raspberry at the whole thing.

It features him in a “Krypton Lifting Team” t-shirt — that’s Superman’s home planet — as

Toronto Film Review: ‘Hold the Dark’

Toronto Film Review: ‘Hold the Dark’
Jeremy Saulnier’s 2016 breakthrough, “Green Room,” depicted a traveling punk band held captive by a gang of white supremacists in a remote corner of Oregon. For his fourth and most ambitious film, “Hold the Dark,” the director returns again to sinister goings-on within secluded, rural communities, only this time the evil at hand is much more Judge Holden than David Duke. Boasting the sort of shocking brutality and unnerving menace that has become Saulnier’s signature, “Hold the Dark” is also a strangely seductive film, and one that understands the difference between simple plot resolution and catharsis, leading us on a journey into Alaska’s frigid heart of darkness that poses more questions than it answers.

Hold the Dark” is unflinchingly violent, at times almost excessively so, and yet its starkest act of savagery occurs in the first few minutes, and is all the more haunting for its ambiguity. In

‘Hold the Dark’ Film Review: Frigid Missing-Child Thriller Disappoints

‘Hold the Dark’ Film Review: Frigid Missing-Child Thriller Disappoints
Hold the Dark” is a perfectly adequate film made by an especially talented director, Jeremy Saulnier. Alternately pulse-racing and somnambulant, it’s a thriller that starts strong before running out of gas.

It begins in the Alaskan wilderness, where three children have recently been killed. The locals suspect the culprit is a pack of vicious wolves. Medora Slone (Riley Keough) has a similar hunch after the disappearance of her son, Bailey (Beckam Crawford).

Enraged and scared, she enlists author Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright) to fly cross-country and help track down her missing child. Russell has experience with locating (and terminating) wolves. His acclaimed book details his grisly entanglements.
