The UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) was the first @unpeacekeeping operation to have an all-female contingent thanks to India’s deployment of a police unit. In the picture, the officers perform at a martial arts exhibit at a ceremony in 2008 in the capital of Liberia, Monrovia, where they were awarded the United Nations Medal.

The Indian police officers served as role models for Liberia’s women and girls, triggering a fourfold increase in the number of Liberian women applying to join the police force.

India has provided more than 200,000 military and police officers to United Nations Peacekeeping over the last 70 years. We thank these brave men and women for their service and sacrifice.

An ominous mushroom cloud rose thousands of feet into the air blotting out the sun and showering deadly ash and radioactive debris on what remained of the town and people of Hiroshima, Japan on 6 August 1945.

“What occurred in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 cannot and must not ever happen again. The future of our children and of our children’s children depends upon it,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

73 years after the atomic bombings, the UN and partners work to end nuclear tests worldwide.

“At first I thought I would just come here and pass my time. But I realized that this might be my dream – so I have been doing a lot of baking. With the new instructors coming, I gained more experience and lot of information on how to bake.“

A year ago, Monica, 25, barely knew how to bake. Now, her baking skills are sharper, thanks to a 12-week hands-on baking course run by @unpeacekeeping troops from South Korea serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

For the last two years, UN Peacekeepers have been running a training centre to help develop self-sustaining basic skills amongst young South Sudanese. Bakery training is one of several courses being offered to provide young people with a new lifeline.

Throwback Thursday to June 2017 when a nine-foot-tall whale tail, a six-foot-long salmon, and a ten-foot-tall seahorse, all made from trash, grabbed the attention of Ocean Conference participants at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Every piece of these sculptures was once purchased by someone, discarded, became waterborne, and landed on a beach where someone else picked it up and made a difference.
