Patrick Stewart to Return as Jean-Luc Picard in New ‘Star Trek’ Series
Patrick Stewart is making a comeback as his iconic character Jean-Luc Picard in the upcoming “Star Trek” series for CBS All Access, the star said on Saturday.

Stewart made the announcement in a surprise showing at the Las Vegas “Star Trek” Convention, and shared it soon after on Twitter.

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with ‘Star Trek’ had run its natural course,” Stewart said. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Runs Past ‘Christopher Robin’
Tom Cruise is the clear winner at North American multiplexes this weekend with "Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” heading for a solid $35 million second weekend, estimates showed Saturday.

Paramount’s second weekend of “Fallout” easily topped the launch of Disney’s live-action “Christopher Robin,” which debuted with a respectable $27 million at 3,602 screens at the low end of forecasts. Lionsgate’s action-comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me” will finish third with about $12.4 million at 3,111 locations, matching expectations.

Fox’s opening of dystopian sci-fier “The Darkest Minds” debuted quietly with about $6 million at 3,127 locations behind a quartet of holdovers — Universal’s third weekend of “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” with $9 million, Sony’s third weekend of “The Eqaulizer 2” with $8.3 million, Sony’s fourth weekend of “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” with $8.1 million and Disney’s fifth weekend of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” with $6.3 million.

Halloween Producer Wants William Shatner for a Cameo

Halloween Producer Wants William Shatner for a Cameo
The new Halloween movie will be hitting theaters soon and producer Malek Akkad has hinted at the possibility of a William Shatner cameo in the future. Blumhouse is behind the new entry into the franchise that is being billed as a direct sequel to the first film under the direction of David Gordon Green. While the new installment is ignoring much of the last handful of movies, it definitely is not ignoring the look of The Shape, which means that the old William Shatner mask is back, and Akkad wants to see the real-life Shatner come face to face with his likeness on the big screen.

Malek Akkad recently revealed in an interview that he has wanted to get a William Shatner cameo for quite some time now, even noting that he has reached out to the Star Trek icon. When asked if Shatner had ever contacted him about the

‘Star Wars’ Won’t Be on Disney’s Streaming Service Until 2024

‘Star Wars’ Won’t Be on Disney’s Streaming Service Until 2024
The Force isn’t that strong with this one. We’ve known for some time now that Disney is no longer content to let Netflix stream its movies and will be launching an unnamed streaming service of its own to compete, but not every title will be available. As noted by Bloomberg, for instance, Disney unsuccessfully attempted to reacquire the TV rights to “Star Wars” and the from Turner Broadcasting — meaning Episodes I–VI won’t be available until 2024.

Turner, whose main cable networks are TBS and TNT, can exclusively air the three main trilogies and standalone entries on the small screen and online for another six years. The company “would want financial considerations and programming to replace the lost films,” according to Bloomberg’s sources, and “the talks haven’t advanced further.”

Turner paid around $275 million for the rights to “Star Wars” in 2016, which was before Disney finished plans for its own streaming service.

FX CEO on Animated ‘Deadpool’ Series: ‘We Would Have Done Show’ That Donald Glover Wrote

FX CEO on Animated ‘Deadpool’ Series: ‘We Would Have Done Show’ That Donald Glover Wrote
There really isn’t any chance of Donald Glover’s animated “Deadpool” series being revived, in case you were holding out hope. FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed as much at the Television Critics Association summer tour Friday, answering Variety with a simple “no” when asked about the possibility — not that he seems happy about it.

“I think that Marvel will revive it because they have the rights,” he added. “They own the IP and they have the rights to do an animated adult series based on any of the X-Men characters, and based on Deadpool specifically.

“They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done [the] show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them

Box-Office Milestone: 'Black Panther' Crosses $700M in U.S. Almost Six Months After Release

Box-Office Milestone: 'Black Panther' Crosses $700M in U.S. Almost Six Months After Release
Black Panther is the gift that keeps on giving.

Nearly six months after it first opened in theaters, Ryan Coogler's groundbreaking superhero movie is crossing the $700 million mark in North America, Disney and Marvel announced Saturday.

Only two other films have ever crossed the $700 million threshold: Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million), not adjusted for inflation.

In recent weeks, Disney and Marvel slightly tweaked the film's theater count in order to achieve the feat without an official rerelease. Black Panther's longevity in theaters is unusual in an age when most films ...

Antoine Fuqua on Clearing Paths for Black Filmmakers, Taking Denzel International
Locarno, Switzerland — Originally announced as a movie re-teaming, post “Southpaw,” Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “The Man Who Made It Snow” is now set up at Epix as a limited TV series, Fuqua said Saturday at Locarno Festival, where he will present Denzel Washington-starrer “The Equalizer 2” at the 8,000 seat Piazza Grande, one of the biggest open-air cinemas in Europe.

Inspired by the true story of Max Mermelstein, a Jewish hotel engineer who becomes embroiled unwittingly and then unwillingly in the building billion-dollar U.S. drug trade of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel, “The Man Who Made It Snow” was originally written by Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor. A new screenwriter is now being brought in to transform the movie into a drama series. Gyllenhaal may or may not be involved, according to his schedule, said Fuqua.

“What I love about it is that Max was a nerd,

FX Boss On ‘Deadpool’ Animated Series’ Demise, Chances For ‘Louie’ Return & ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ End Date
It came as a shocker when FX in March announced that it is not going forward with its Marvel’s Deadpool animated adult action-comedy series, from Atlanta creator/executive producer/star Donald Glover and writer Stephen Glover, citing “creative differences”

Landgraf made it clear the decision was entirely Marvel’s. “Marvel controls the IP and the decisions around the IP. it was their decision not to go forward with Donald and Stephen’s version, I personally liked it.,” he told Deadline.

Louis C.K.’s Emmy-winning comedy series Louie already had been on an indefinite hiatus when the allegations of sexual harassment against him surfaced last fall, prompting FX to sever ties with him. Could Louie ever come back to FX?

Landgraf was noncommittal. “I don’t know,” he told Deadline. “I think a lot of it comes down to the women stepping up across society, and their voices are being

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Filmmakers: ‘We Looked Pretty Smart’ Thanks to ‘Black Panther’ Success

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Filmmakers: ‘We Looked Pretty Smart’ Thanks to ‘Black Panther’ Success
(Note: This post contains spoilers for “Avengers: Infinity War.”)

It was probably no surprise to audiences that, by far, the biggest crowd cheers in “Infinity War” came during scenes set in Wakanda. The fictional, super-advanced African nation was, after all, the setting for “Black Panther,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe film released just before “Infinity War” that became a serious cultural phenomenon on its way to earning $1.3 billion.

But it was a (happy) surprise to “Infinity War” directors Joe and Anthony Russo and screenwriters Chris Markus and Steve McFeely, who shot the scenes and even tested their film long before they knew what a big deal “Black Panther” would become.

Or as McFeely put it in the commentary on the “Infinity War” home video release: “Listen, a year ahead of time, we had no idea ‘Wakanda Forever’ was going to be amazing.”

Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a brand new “Star Trek” series on CBS All Access, Variety has learned.

The exact plot details are being kept mostly under wraps, though the series is said to tell the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life. That indicates that it will take place after the events of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” rather than being a prequel or reboot.

The untitled series hails from Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer. Kurtzman, Duff, Goldsman, and Chabon will also serve as

Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ To Cross $700 Million in North America

‘Empire’ Co-Creator Danny Strong Would Return as ‘Poor, Poor Jonathan’ for ‘Buffy’ Reboot

‘Empire’ Co-Creator Danny Strong Would Return as ‘Poor, Poor Jonathan’ for ‘Buffy’ Reboot
Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum Danny Strong is a true superstar — unlike his Joss Whedon-created alter ego, Jonathan Levinson, who could only pull off that level of success in Hollywood if he cast another spell.

But while the Emmy winner and “Empire” co-creator has his hands full with his own TV series nowadays, Strong told TheWrap during the Television Critics Association press tour he would be happy to reprise his role for the recently-announced reboot.

“I would appear on it as Jonathan if they wanted Jonathan,” Strong told TheWrap, while promoting his upcoming Fox drama “Proven Innocent.” “Poor, poor, Jonathan. I don’t think Jonathan made it, though. So it might be tricky.”

TV Review: HBO’s ‘Random Acts of Flyness’

It was initially hard to understand what HBO meant when it first described “Random Acts of Flyness” as “a fluid, stream-of-conscious response to the contemporary American mediascape.” But it becomes clear exactly what that means barely two minutes into the series, a surreal shapeshifter that defies categorization with every (purposefully) jarring cut.

Under creator Terence Nance’s watchful and discerning eye, “Random Acts of Flyness” stitches everything from found footage, to satirical skits, to interviews reenacted through stop motion animation together with beautiful cinematography to create a sort of televisual collage. Together, they all reveal incisive truths about what it

Everyone Turned to Ashes When Thanos Snapped His Fingers, Through ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’

Everyone Turned to Ashes When Thanos Snapped His Fingers, Through ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’
(Note: This post contains massive spoilers for both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” so read on at your own risk!)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was gutted by the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” and the arrival of Thanos, a villain so strong even the combined might of nearly every McU superhero couldn’t stop him.

You know what happened by now: Despite a valiant effort to stop Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Avengers and their allies failed. The Mad Titan collected all six Infinity Stones on his Infinity Gauntlet, and with a snap his fingers used their united power to erase half of all life in the universe. All because Thanos believes mass murder on a cosmic scale will rid the universe of its problems and free the survivors to create sustainable utopias.

Future Maintains Prolific Pace With Surprise New Song ‘Scammalot’

Future‘s prolific 2018 continues with a surprise new track titled “Scammalot.” The song arrives less than a month after the rapper dropped his Beast Mode 2 mixtape.

“Scammalot” appeared on Future’s official YouTube page with little warning Saturday (via Stereogum), a method the rapper has utilized recently to offset unauthorized leaks; in May, Future officially released his Chance the Rapper collaboration “My Peak” on YouTube, 15 months after the song leaked. On Thursday, Future uploaded another unreleased track dubbed “Translator” with little fanfare.

Future didn’t provide any production information for the two-minute song.
