China’s ‘Billionaire’ Earns $131 Million in Its Opening Weekend

China’s ‘Billionaire’ Earns $131 Million in Its Opening Weekend
By far the biggest film of the weekend outside North America, China’s “Hello Mr. Billionaire” opened with $131 million in its home territory.

The comedy was far ahead of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” which earned $92 million in international markets, plus a further $61.5 million in North America, for a global total of $153.5 million.

“Billionaire” is the latest product from the team – director Yan Fei and writer Peng Damo – behind 2015 surprise hit “Goodbye My Loser.” It sees a failing soccer player challenged to spend $147 million (RMB1 billion) in a single month.

The film was released in competition with the fourth installment in one of Chinese film’s most beloved franchises, “Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings.” That scored $42.5 million over the same three-day period. On any other weekend, figures for “Detective Dee” might have been considered a triumph. But exhibitors quickly moved to support the runaway success of “Billionaire” over the fantasy adventure.

Bi Gan’s ‘Journey’ to Open Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival
“Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” by rising star mainland Chinese director Bi Gan has been set as the opening film of the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan. The festival runs through much of November and has its high point with the Golden Horse Film Awards, which are open to films in any variant of the Chinese language.

A slow-moving love story of sorts, “Journey” debuted in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes festival earlier this year. There it was noted for a bravura 40-minute take executed in 3D.

The festival will close with another cutting-edge film, “Your Face,” by veteran Taiwan-based auteur Tsai Ming-liang. The film comprising only close-up shots will debut first in the Venice festival. Tsai’s Vr work “The Deserted” last year had a similar trajectory opening in Venice and continuing at the Golden Horse parade.

It was previously announced that Chinese actress

Stephen Colbert on Les Moonves New Yorker Expose: ‘Ronan Isn’t Known for His Puff Pieces’ (Video)
Stephen Colbert took time away from joking about President Trump and Michael Cohen on Monday night to address the elephant in the room at CBS: the sexual misconduct accusations aimed at Les Moonves.

Colbert started his opening monologue by saying he’d had a relaxing weekend down in South Carolina where they don’t have internet yet. “But I heard there was an article about CBS chairman and a man I hope isn’t watching tonight’s monologue, Les Moonves,” he said cautiously.

“Where was the article?” he asked. “In the New Yorker,” said a voiceover. “Oh, it’s a quality publication,” Colbert replied, “Was it one of those cartoons? Was it talk of the town?”

‘The Darkest Minds’ Film Review: Ya Tale Delivers Its Allegories With Crisp Efficiency

‘The Darkest Minds’ Film Review: Ya Tale Delivers Its Allegories With Crisp Efficiency
Originality is overrated. A film like “The Darkest Minds,” in which children have superpowers and the government is out to get them, looks a heck of a lot like other superhero movies and Ya adaptations, and it’s loaded with a ton of on-the-nose metaphors for youthful oppression.

But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. These factors don’t keep “The Darkest Minds” from greatness; only the film’s middle-of-the-road presentation does that.

The Ya genre, especially in its leaner, cinematic form, generally lives and dies on the power of its allegories. No matter how broad, or even ridiculous, the stories become, if they reflect genuine adolescent emotions and tangible, real-world issues, they can more or less get away with anything.
