Sociology Standards

Education Standards

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools (SIS) activities are based on relevant education standards and guidelines that outline the foundational knowledge and skills students should have at certain levels. The SIS activities — which are designed to supplement or guide, not replace, existing curricula — help develop these skills and knowledge.

Not all educators use the same standards. For this reason, many of the activities address multiple standards and guidelines.

American Sociological Association’s National Standards for High School Sociology [PDF]
  • Published in 2015, these standards are designed to assist teachers and administrators who want to develop high-quality, developmentally appropriate introductory sociology courses over one semester for students in ninth through 12th grades.
  • These standards are organized by four learning domains; each represents a broad area of sociological knowledge and study appropriate for high school.
