Dr. Enrique Lamas is performing the non-exclusive duties and functions of the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Previously, he served as the Associate Director for Demographic Programs. The Demographic Programs Directorate provides relevant and accurate information on the size, distribution and characteristics of the nation’s population, income and poverty, and housing. Demographic programs bridge the gap between censuses, providing information for policy decisions to promote the economic and social well-being of the United States. Additionally, the directorate is responsible for gathering international demographic data; providing survey and statistical services to other government agencies, such as survey design, data collection and data processing; maintaining strong partnerships with sponsors and stakeholders; and designing and marketing new products that meet national and international information needs.

From 2006 to 2012, Lamas served as Chief of the Population Division, where he was responsible for the population estimates and projections program, race and ethnicity statistics, the analysis of demographic census data, and international demographic studies and technical assistance projects. 

Lamas has held positions in three divisions of the Demographic Directorate. He served as Assistant Division Chief in the Demographic Surveys Division, where he was responsible for about 15 household surveys. In the Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division (now the Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division), he was Chief of the Poverty and Wealth Statistics Branch and Chief of the Labor Force and Transfer Programs Statistics Branch. He began his career in 1980 in the Population Division, working on income and poverty statistics projects.

Lamas has a doctorate in economics from The George Washington University.
