HotReports

HotReports, built upon TheDataWeb framework, use analytical output from DataFerrett to create custom, dynamic websites by bringing together relevant statistics from multiple datasets, eliminating the need to locate and extract information from many different data sources one dataset at a time. Because HotReports source data directly from TheDataWeb, which is the same source DataFerrett and the data API access, the same answer is assured no matter which method is used.

The primary audiences for HotReports are casual novices, non-technical users, policy makers, and analysts. HotReports are topically oriented, interactive reports developed by Subject Matter Experts, thus ensuring statistical accuracy and appropriate measures are used. In so doing, the need for an intermediary developer and the requisite back and forth on specifications and requirements is eliminated, saving significant time and money. The HotReport pages incorporate maps, charts, text, and tables from multiple sources, and can perform calculations on the fly. Since HotReports can combine data from many sources and allow users to make multiple selections (such as choosing a different geography, measure, and year), users have access to an infinite number of reports based on a single report design. Users get the customized information they’re looking for and authors only have to create the report one time. This makes HotReports particularly effective for non-technical data users such as local decision makers faced with an immediate need for information.

HotReports can also include dynamic text that updates as users interact with the page. The user can manipulate entire reports or just specific sections of a report by clicking, dragging, or selecting objects on the page. Additionally, individual objects or complete pages can be printed or saved for future use. The user can also click a graphic to display or download underlying data making the website more accessible to those with visual impairments and allowing the user to conduct additional analysis in other software. The underlying data table can also include additional information not shown in the graphic.

HotReports are used both internally at the Census Bureau for data review, and externally for public consumption to complement or replace traditional written reports. External agencies can also use HotReports to serve the public for example:

 

• The EPA Sustainable Communities HotReport: A collaborative effort by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department Of Transportation, and TheDataWeb team to create a dynamic report using Census Bureau public use data linked to TheDataWeb. It displays measures specifically focused on indicators developed by the Sustainable Communities effort.
• The Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) HotReport: Commissioned by IMLS, the report integrates information from multiple datasets linked to TheDataWeb for dynamic display, with the Public Library Survey (PLS) as its focal point. The PLS is collected by the Census Bureau, and is sponsored by IMLS.
