Brothers Jeff Langer and Cameron Langer want what’s best for 135 Cross Road in Oakland.

Though they were adults when their parents built the five-bedroom, they still have fond memories of fundraisers, parties and holidays hosted at the expansive estate.

Nestled on nearly half an acre in Upper Rockridge’s Claremont Pines neighborhood, the shingled two-story offers an accessible, open floor plan. The wide entryways and elevator helped their mother navigate the home as her mobility decreased in her final years, Jeff Langer said.

“It’s a really well thought out house,” he said.

Their father built the home in the mid-1990s after the house they grew up in turned to ash during the Oakland firestorm of 1991. He filled the new home with custom built-ins, madrone floors and several sets of French doors leading outside.

Beyond the foyer stands one of the home’s defining features, a grand staircase the brothers estimate cost $60,000 to build.

“The sweeping, curving staircase is really spectacular,” Jeff Langer said. “Mom would be peering over the crowd at parties and then go down the steps so she could make an elegant entrance.”

The living room features a coffered ceiling, clerestory windows, a fireplace and bookshelves. Multiple sets of French doors along the room’s west side lead to a stone terrace with a cascading waterfall.

A formal dining room opposite the living room also opens to this outdoor entertainment space.

A butcher block island with bar seating anchors the kitchen. Stone counters, a copper exhaust hood and stainless steel appliances accent the culinary hub. Windows framing garden views flank the adjoining breakfast nook.

While melancholy about putting the home on the market, the brothers recognize the time has come for a new family to fill the house with its own memories and traditions.

“We put tremendous effort into preparing the home,” Cameron Langer said. “We tried to do it right in memory of our mother, and we wanted to make sure it’s perfect for the next owners, so they could enjoy it like she did.”
