FAQ

Does The New York Times newsroom have anything to do with the journeys?

Times Journeys is operated independently of the New York Times Travel desk or other departments and members of the newsroom.

Who are the “experts” on the journeys?

Times Journeys has carefully chosen people who have intimate knowledge of your destination: not just the place, but the history, context and relevance. For trips focusing on topics or specific time periods, your experts will be recognizable authorities on the subject.

Do Times journalists go on the journeys?

Some New York Times journalists may be available for part of many of these trips. However, the nature of news means we can’t guarantee who will be available or when.

Once I reserve my Times Journeys trip, what happens next?

After you reserve your trip and pay your deposit, you will be sent a pre-departure package with detailed information about your itinerary and destination, insurance information, what to pack, an invoice, a Participant Information Form and other information needed to prepare for your trip. Final trip details are sent about two to three weeks before departure.

What do I need to bring on my journey?

Don't worry. We'll send you a detailed clothing and equipment list well before departure so you know what you'll need. We provide the rest: comfortable accommodations, an engaging daily itinerary, expert trip management and access to people and places that will thrill and delight you.

Who is eligible for travel?

All travelers are welcome on Times Journeys. Our trips are designed to provide a truly enlightening experience. Whether you are traveling with a partner, family, friend or on your own, you will be sure to forge lasting friendships with your fellow travelers. Our average group size is 18 to 20 per trip, which offers an intimate and comfortable journey. We encourage you to review the pace of the trip to ensure that you and everyone in your group can fully participate in all of the activities. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire trip, and some Times Journeys may not be appropriate for children. If you have questions about whether a Times Journey is right for you, please contact us for more information.

Will I need a visa?

Visas may be required for your destination and are not included in the trip cost. We recommended that you check the U.S. Department of State website for the latest passport and visa requirements. The process takes time, so be sure to check out the requirements 45 to 90 days before your departure. For questions about visas, please contact us at New York Times Journeys: 855-NYT-7979 (885-698-7979).

Do I need to purchase trip insurance?

Trip insurance is optional; costs vary and are additional to the trip cost. We strongly recommend that you purchase this insurance to protect your travel investment. Once you reserve your trip, travel insurance information will be sent to you by the Tour Operator for consideration, though you are free to use any provider of trip insurance.

What are the Terms & Conditions?

All cancellation notices must be received in writing and will become effective as of the date of the postmark or date of the email receipt. If a guest cancels 91 days or more prior to departure, a refund less an administrative fee of 50 percent of the per-person deposit will be made. Per-person charges for cancellations that occur less than 91 days before departure are as follows: 61-90 days prior to departure: 20 percent of the journey cost; 31-60 days before departure: 50 percent of the journey cost; 30 days or fewer days prior to departure: 100 percent of the journey cost. This policy also applies to pre- and post-trip extensions. Any airline tickets issued are subject to the carrier’s refund policy. All terms and conditions can be found at nytimes.com/timesjourneys, or you can call 855-NYT-7979 (855-698-7979) and request that a copy to be sent to you.

Are you able to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences?
