Last Fridayโ€™s protest by Islamic hardliner groups under the coalition name โ€œAlliance Against Facebookโ€™s Wickednessโ€ came to a rather awkward and anti-climactic conclusion as the social media giantโ€™s Jakarta HQ was closed for the day, meaning the protestersโ€™ demands fell on deaf ears.

Jakarta is home to a burgeoning tech scene, as more and more of its citizens are becoming interconnected via the internet and social media. Itโ€™s hardly surprising that Jakarta has been dubbed the social media capital of the world because itโ€™s certainly not rare to see its citizens, particularly the middle class and above, carrying more than one smartphone and other gadgets wherever they go. Even many lower class citizens are glued to their smartphones and are extremely active on social media. As such, technological advancements, particularly those in relation to interconnectivity, is a topic of interest for Jakartans.
