The year is 2008. Pop culture and politics become inseparable after Tina Fey's impersonation of Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live goes viral and Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am molds then-candidate Barack Obama's campaign slogan "Yes We Can" into a celebrity-laden YouTube hit.

Obama makes history when he is elected the first black President of the United States, and the U.S. wins 111 total medals during the Summer Olympics in Beijing, which attracts 4.7 billion worldwide viewers to become the most-watched Olympic games in history. The Dark Knight Rises becomes the highest-grossing movie of the year, with actor Heath Ledger winning a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker. 

Meanwhile, in music, Britney Spears snags a No. 1 hit with "Womanizer" despite heavily-publicized personal issues, Rihanna continues to rake in hits with the reissue of her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded, Flo Rida reveals the hypnotic power of Apple Bottom jeans and furred boots with the hit "Low," and Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" becomes one of the best-selling singles of all time, with a highly-imitated—and parodied—music video to boot.

Flo Rida feat. T-Pain, "Low"
Not to be confused with Florida (the state), the rapper's debut single featuring T-Pain rang in the new year with a spot at No. 1. The song was also featured on the soundtrack for dance movie Step Up 2: The Streets .

Usher feat. Young Jeezy, "Love In This Club"
This ode to public intercourse spent three weeks at the top spot, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.


Leona Lewis, "Bleeding Love"
Although The X Factor winner's second single was already a hit in her native U.K by late 2007, it wasn't until the next year that the singer experienced success across the pond. "Bleeding Love" topped the charts stateside in April and May, becoming Lewis's most successful single worldwide.  


Mariah Carey, "Touch My Body"
After reclaiming her pop star status with the release of her tenth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi, the success of Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC², and its lead single "Touch My Body" solidified her now-reinvigorated career. 


Lil Wayne feat. Static Major, "Lollipop" 
The (not-so-subtle) innuendo-laden, heavily-AutoTuned single proved to be Lil Wayne and Static Major's most successful single.


Coldplay, "Viva La Vida"
The second single from Coldplay's fourth album was the band's first to reach number one both in the U.S. and the U.K. Although the song has prompted plagiarism allegations from artists like Joe Satriani and alternative band Creaky Boards, "Viva La Vida" topped the Hot 100. 


Katy Perry, "I Kissed A Girl"
The then-controversial single spent time at the No. 1 spot and launched Perry into the public eye. The burlesque-inspired music video is also memorable for featuring a then-unknown Kesha. 

Rihanna, "Disturbia"
Though they share the same name and were released the same year, this dark-yet-catchy dance single has no relation to the Shia LaBeouf movie. Like the movie, however, the song was a hit with critics and fans alike, earning RiRi a Grammy nomination for best dance recording and snagging No. 1.

T.I., "Whatever You Like"
T.I. wants you to know you can have whatever you like—which works out well for him, because apparently all anyone wanted in 2008 was this song. The single was the second number one for the rapper.

Pink, "So What"
The lead single from P!nk's "breakup album," Funhouse, this defiantly riotous single proved that P!nk didn't need no man to make hits. "So What" spent a week at No. 1—and she and then-separated-husband Corey Hart are now back together with two children.


T.I. feat. Rihanna, "Live Your Life"
Surprise! When you put two no. 1 hitmakers together, they're going to make a hit. "Live Your Life" placed T.I. and Rihanna's at No. 1 for six weeks in 2008.

Britney Spears, "Womanizer"
2007 was a rough year for Spears, and it seemed like things would only get worse as she headed into 2008. But even amidst public custody battles, a psychiatric hospitalization, and numerous paparazzi-documented breakdowns, Spears landed a No. 1 with "Womanizer." 
 

Beyonce, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)"
Anyone with ears during 2008 doubtless still recognizes the catchy vocals (and coordinating dance moves) from this triple-Grammy award-nominated single from the singer's third album. The music video proved so iconic that the likes of Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg, and Joe Jonas donned the trademark black leotard and tights to recreate it—then-First Couple Barack and Michelle Obama were even filmed doing portions of the dance in 2009.
