A true counterbalance to the constant daily bombardment by the liberal media we are currently experiencing. Everyone should read it to make a truly informed decision on today's issues.

I've subscribed to the print edition of the Standard in the past, but I decided it was time for me to try a Kindle version of the magazine. I had my doubts. I've heard, over the past few years, horror stories of pages that are difficult to read and navigate as well as difficulty keeping track of what you have and haven't read, etc. Well, after looking through my first Kindle edition of The Weekly Standard, all I can say is I really do love it. I'm surprised that the advertising in the print edition doesn't appear on my Kindle. (I have the paperwhite model, and that might be why. I don't know. Maybe the ads are present on the Fire.) You get a sort of table of contents of the magazine breaking the articles down into sections, i.e., casual, editorial, features, etc. The breakdown tells you how many articles each section contains. Then you just tap the right side of the screen to move through a section, article by article. You are given a word count for each article just under its title, which is nice. And there is a progress bar at the bottom of the screen that graphically represents your progress through the article. Maybe the rest of the world already knew how good e-book magazines had gotten, but I didn't. I'm just delighted. Even the ability to get dictionary definitions of words by pressing on the word you're unsure of works. (And the brainiacs at the Standard love to show off their erudite minds and high IQ's, so you'll appreciate the help.) And I love the monthly subscription. The annual bill of $72 for the print edition always came at the most inconvenient time. A dollar an issue is a good deal. I love the book reviews in the Standard. Now all that Amazon needs to do is enable e-book purchases when a Weekly Standard reader highlights the name of a book mentioned in an article.

Having lasted almost 20 years, "The Weekly Standard" has carved out a niche for being one of the premier political magazines in America. Even when I disagree with it--usually on foreign policy--I do not find this magazine disagreeable. It has excellent reviews of books and, to a lesser extent, movies. Unlike other publications on the right, it is published each week making it much more current than say "National Review" or "The American Conservative."

The Kindle version is remarkable bringing the entire magazine to the screen with little problems. Be warned--a standard Kindle will not be able to get "The Weekly Standard" though the Kindle Fire should have no problem with it.

The Weekly Standard has excellent writers and, despite the stereotype, many of them are conservatives and do give an objective viewpoint and give a fair accounting of most sides of the conversation. However, to me the publisher has really shifted further to the right and has spent more of the front matter of the last few months on a further-right campaign that detracts from just telling me the story: I’d rather hear both sides and make up my own mind rather than being told all Democrats are evil and the Republican base needs to shift on the whims of the publisher. After six months of receiving it on my Kindle Fire, I ended my subscription.
