'Maze Runner' #1, 'Jumanji' & 'Showman' Hold Strong & 'Padmaavat' Takes Spot in Top Ten
Despite a 25% decline compared to the opening for its predecessor, Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure still managed a #1 finish at the weekend box office. Meanwhile, Entertainment Studios saw Hostiles deliver a solid performance as it expanded nationwide, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman continue to hold strong, The Shape of Water expands with strong numbers on the heels of its 13 Oscar nominations and Viva's Padmaavat secures a spot in the top ten despite playing in just 324 theaters. All told, the weekend's top twelve was still down ~7% compared to last year as January has slowed to a crawl. With an estimated $23.5 million Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure topped the weekend box office. Carrying the largest budget of the three films ($62m) in the franchise, while not an unexpected debut, it remains a disappointing one as Death Cure comes in ~$7 million behind the debut

Ace Eddies 2018: ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Coco’ Win Editing Awards

Ace Eddies 2018: ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Coco’ Win Editing Awards
“Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan’s trippy, clock-ticking experiment in pure cinema, “I, Tonya,” the black comedy about notorious figure skater Tonya Harding (Oscar nominee Margo Robbie), and “Coco,” Pixar’s ode to Día de los Muertos, took top editing honors in drama, comedy, and animation respectively at the 68th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.

Ace is a great Oscar predictor for editing (23 out of the last 27 years ), which now makes “Dunkirk” the favorite for editor Lee Smith. It beat Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, edited by Sidney Wolinsky. And, surprisingly, for comedy, “I Tonya” (Tatiana Riegel) triumphed over “Baby Driver” (Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Jon Gregory). These are the five Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing. However, as a Best Picture predictor, Ace hasn’t fared as well, picking the winner 16 out of the last 27 years.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Hits Season High Ratings, ‘The Resident’ Draws L3 Crowd

‘Saturday Night Live’ Hits Season High Ratings, ‘The Resident’ Draws L3 Crowd
Will Ferrell was very, very good to “Saturday Night Live.” NBC’s late-night mainstay delivered season-high ratings in Nielsen’s overnight metered markets with the episode hosted by the former “SNL” trooper and featuring musical guest Chris Stapleton.

“SNL” grabbed a 4.9 household rating and 11 share in Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, which represent about 70% of U.S. TV households. The show also delivered a healthy 2.3/11 in adults 18-49.

Those numbers marked “SNL’s” best since the May 20 season finale of the 2016-17 season, which ranked as “SNL’s” most-watched season in 22 years. Saturday’s edition of “SNL” was stronger than anything the broadcast networks served up in primetime including ABC’s coverage of the NBA’s Boston Celtics-Golden State Warriors game.

London Critics’ Circle Film Awards: ‘Three Billboards’ wins 3 including Best Picture, Timothee Chalamet in Best Actor upset

London Critics’ Circle Film Awards: ‘Three Billboards’ wins 3 including Best Picture, Timothee Chalamet in Best Actor upset
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won three of its leading seven bids at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday (Jan. 28), including Best Picture. While Martin McDonagh lost the Best Director race to Sean Baker (“The Florida Project”) he did win for his script. And his leading lady, Frances McDormand, picked up another prize on her seemingly inevitable march to the Oscars. (See the full list of winners below).

However, Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) hit a bump in the road as he lost Best Actor to one of his Oscar rivals — Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”) — and the award for British or Irish actor of the year to another, Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”). Oscar hopeful Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) won that homegrown award on the distaff side. And “Dunkirk” claimed Best British/Irish Film over, among others, “Three Billboards.”

John Morris, ‘Blazing Saddles’ and ‘Young Frankenstein’ Composer, Dies at 91

John Morris, ‘Blazing Saddles’ and ‘Young Frankenstein’ Composer, Dies at 91
John Morris, Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning composer for many of the classic Mel Brooks comedies including “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein,” died Thursday at his home in Red Hook, N.Y. He was 91.

Morris was Oscar-nominated for co-writing, with Brooks, the title song for “Blazing Saddles” – a sendup of classic movie cowboy tunes sung by Frankie Laine for the opening of Brooks’ 1974 film. Morris was nominated again in 1980 for his dramatic score for the Brooks-produced “The Elephant Man.”

Morris served as Brooks’ composer beginning with “The Producers” in 1967; he wrote the original arrangement for Brooks’ famous “Springtime for Hitler” song, and composed the rest of the underscore.

Morris’ most famous score is undoubtedly “Young Frankenstein,” for which he composed a memorable violin theme that plays a key role in the story. Under the title “Transylvanian Lullaby,” it has even been performed by top classical artists from violinist Gil Shaham to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul win 1st Grammy Award for ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ on the way to a possible early Egot
Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on their way to being the youngest Egot winners ever. They triumphed at the Grammy Awards for the first time on Sunday for Best Musical Theater Album of “Dear Evan Hansen” as the show’s producers and composers.

In the past 12 months alone, the duo won Best Original Song at the Oscars along with composer Justin Hurwitz for the “La La Land” song “City of Stars.” They prevailed at the Tony Awards in the category of Best Original Score for “Dear Evan Hansen.” They are now just an Emmy Award away from Egot status and have the Fox holiday special “A Christmas Story” live musical on that ballot this summer.
