NLM Disaster Information Projects and Research
- Virtual Reality Disaster Health Preparedness Training
The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Virtual Reality Disaster Health Preparedness Training program leverages simulation, computer gaming and instructional design technologies to develop training tools to support disaster preparedness training needs of the health workforce. The NLM Disaster Information Management Research Center (DIMRC) investigates and develops applications that enable a variety of learning experiences on either mobile devices, personal computers or the latest immersive virtual reality platforms, for individual or collaborative (team or multi-player) learning.- NLM Disaster Health Information Outreach & Collaboration Projects
NLM has offered funding for disaster information outreach projects supporting collaboration between libraries/information centers and disaster-related organizations, and for public and other libraries to conduct community preparedness and disaster awareness events.- Bethesda Hospitals' Emergency Preparedness Partnership (BHEPP)
A critical aspect of effective disaster response is developing plans and policies that are evidence-based. To contribute to the expanding scientific knowledge base in emergency management, BHEPP is conducting research on activities that may help improve preparedness and response. BHEPP started a program of 11 research and development initiatives in 2008 and focuses on four areas of investigation:
- NIH Disaster Research Response Project
The NIH Disaster Research Response Project developed by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in collaboration with NLM, aims to create a disaster research system consisting of coordinated environmental health disaster research data collection tools and a network of trained research responders. Elements of the system include epidemiologic questionnaires and clinical protocols, specially trained disaster researchers, environmental health disaster research networks, a reachâback roster of subject matter experts, and a support infrastructure that can be activated and deployed during public health emergencies and declared disasters.- NLM Informatics Awards for Disaster Management (2003-2007)
Between 2003 - 2007, NLM funded a number of research grants related to disaster management informatics.- Scaleable Information Infrastructure Awards (2003-2005)
NLM funded a number of projects to apply scalable advanced network infrastructure to health care testbeds. Many of these projects related to emergency preparedness and response. Recorded presentations are also available from a 2007 conference on these projects.
