Portland is in the midst of a housing crisis caused by too few homes for too many people. So why is it considering a proposal to make things worse? Editorial: http://www.oregonlive.com/…/where_a_home_for_everyone_coll.…

As progressive as Portlanders like to believe themselves to be, there's no issue like population growth and housing to bring out their inner conservative. As the city's population has surged, established neighborhoods have sought historic designation to guard against change. Homeowners...

Sen. Jeff Kruse has yet to apologize or demonstrate that he understands that he's made his colleagues in Salem feel humiliated and uncomfortable. When he has commented on the allegations, Kruse had played dumb or spouted old-school lines that these women are just being overly-sensitive and misunderstood his good intentions.

Sen. Kruse should resign his seat. The Republican owes that to the people of Roseburg, who - because of his bad behavior - have lost their voice in the Oregon Senate.

The Portland region is suffering a critical shortage of affordable housing and the number of people suffering homelessness has continued to rise.

Does now seem like a good time for Clackamas County, which also has seen an increase in its homeless population, to try to sell a 100-unit public housing project?

No, it doesn't.

Problem is, where will the hundreds of View Manor residents go now, when affordable housing in the region is next to impossible to find?

Who told Oregon's 16 coordinated-care organizations that they could keep $64 million in public money that they were never supposed to receive? Oregon Health Authority won't say. One of many questions that the state should answer. Editorial: http://www.oregonlive.com/…/the_curious_lack_of_curiosity.h…

Last year, the federal government alerted the Oregon Health Authority to a $74 million problem: For three years, the state had overpaid its 16 health-care partners for providing services to older, low-income Oregonians as part of its expansion of Medicaid...

Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw has been on the job for only a month. Still, her handling of two significant issues so far marks a disappointing start for her tenure. http://www.oregonlive.com/…/a_disappointing_start_for_chie.…

The success of new Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw's tenure won't ride on what she did or did not do in her first month on the job. She'll have plenty of opportunities in coming months to show her leadership abilities...

Rising chronic absenteeism, declining test results and the 3rd worst high school graduation rate in the country expose the costs of Oregon Gov. Kate Brown's contradictory educational "vision." http://www.oregonlive.com/…/gov_browns_education_vision_bl.…

The forced resignation of Salam Noor, Oregon's deputy superintendent for education, would seem to be a political two-fer for Gov. Kate Brown. First, sacking Noor helps give the impression that Brown means business when it comes to reversing the state's...

Last week, the Early Learning Council ignored recommendations by the Oregon Health Authority and the Department of Education that licensed day care centers test their water for lead. Instead, the Early Learning Council decided it was a "huge burden" to require operators to cover tests estimated to cost between $63 and $95.

Concern that facilities might close - broken by the $100 charge - apparently outweighs the risk that young children could suffer lasting learning disabilities or nervous system damage from even a low-level exposure to lead.
http://www.oregonlive.com/…/misplaced_concern_editorial.htm…

The Early Learning Council appears more worried about the risk of day care facilities closing than the possibility of young children suffering lasting damage from exposure to lead.

Today's OpEd: "Portland is a city that talks a lot about race but is uncomfortable taking action that disrupts and transforms systemic racism."

We need Portland's new superintendent and school board to take stances and show leadership here. They should support Kairos to stay in place.

Portland's regressive, ill-conceived, poorly-executed, inequitable arts tax should go back to voters: Editorial: http://www.oregonlive.com/…/portlands_arts_tax_should_go_b.…

The Portland arts tax was never about smart governance or fiscal responsibility. From its inception, the $35 tax to benefit schools and arts organizations was about getting Portland residents to pick up a tab that does not belong to them. So...

From a letter to the editor by Curt Helmer of Warrenton:

"Many professional athletes are kneeling in protest during the playing of the national anthem. I do not take offense at their actions. I do not view this as a protest against veterans. I'll bet every single one of those players would speak highly about, and pay tribute to, those who serve in the military."

Unlike President Trump, I acknowledge the players are exercising their right of freedom of speech to protest how many minorities are being treated across the country.

Oregon is one of only two states that doesn't require juries to unanimously find defendants guilty of felony charges. Time to join the rest of the nation. Editorial: http://www.oregonlive.com/…/justice_requires_a_tougher_sta.…

In federal courts and in almost every state in the nation, juries find defendants guilty of felony charges only if the entire jury votes to convict. That longstanding tradition of unanimity, incorporated in the 6th Amendment, makes sense in a...

From this week's George Will column:

"Convinced that people, like the planet, are frightfully fragile -- vulnerable to ingesting refined flour and countless other dangers -- it's no wonder progressives want a caring government to superintend our lives."
