Sam Sweeney joined ABC7/WJLA-TV and NewsChannel 8 in April 2015 as a reporter for Good Morning Washington. Monday through Friday, Sam's alarm is set for 2AM, and he's wide awake and on air by 4:30AM.

Sam comes to WJLA from the NBC station in Fort Myers/Naples, Florida. Sam started his career at the NBC affiliate in Atlantic City, New Jersey, covering Hurricane Sandy live from the evacuated city.

Prior to becoming a journalist, Sam served as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in a rural village in El Salvador. Sam learned Spanish, tilled the fields, and had a water system installed that brought potable water to his village.

Sam graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University where he majored in Journalism with a minor in Spanish.

Sam hails from the suburbs of Philadelphia, and has known since age 5 that he wanted to be a TV journalist. Having grown up with a minor obsession with Tom Brokaw, Sam couldn't be happier to be living his childhood dream.

Sam is an avid international traveler. He has backpacked across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. His passport includes stamps from nearly 50 countries.
