Google will expand Portland office by 40 percent

Google is adding to its downtown Portland engineering office, adding 8,000 square feet to the 18,000 square feet it currently occupies.

The tech giant has had a Portland presence since 2010, when it purchased a small Tualatin company called Instantiations and moved operations downtown. Last year it moved into renovated offices in the US National Bank Block on Southwest Sixth Avenue.

The company leased 26,000 square feet at that location but initially built out only 18,000 square feet. Google says it's now building out the rest.

Google had 40 Portland employees in the spring of 2016 and now employs 60. The company wouldn't say how many more it expects to hire for the expanded office.

No large tech company has its headquarters in Oregon, but many big tech businesses have outposts in the Portland area. In addition to Intel (whose Washington County sites are its largest anywhere) Salesforce, Amazon, Airbnb, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., eBay, Lam Research, Nvidia, New Relic, Wacom and Xerox, among others, all have a substantial presence in the region.
