Made in England: Three Classics by Powell and Pressburger

Mubi is showing Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) in November and December, 2017 in the United States in the series Powell & Pressburger: Together and Apart. The story goes that when they were casting their first flat-out masterpiece together, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger sent a letter to an actress outlining a manifesto of their production company, called "the Archers." At the time, the Archers was freshly incorporated, with Powell and Pressburger sharing all credit for writing, directing, and producing, and their manifesto had five points. Point one was to ensure that they provided their financial backers with "a profit, not a loss," which may raise eyebrows among those who are used to manifestos burning with anti-capitalist fire—but then, in a system like commercial cinema, profitability buys freedom. »

Duffers Reveal They Almost Killed Off Eleven In Season 1 Of ‘Stranger Things’

58 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

**Spoilers ahead**

Before “Stranger Things” was a pop culture phenomenon, it was literally a show that nobody wanted. Upwards of twenty networks turned the series down, before Netflix jumped on board. And credit to the streaming service — they said they wanted a bonafide series, instead of the Duffers’ original vision of a limited or anthology series. The rest, as they say, is history. However, had the Duffers been given the chance to make a limited-run version of “Stranger Things,” they would’ve killed off what has become the most popular character on the show.

From ‘The Big Sick’ to ‘The Disaster Artist,’ 2017’s Best Performances Find Actors Playing Themselves

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Historically, the Oscars have a very particular definition of what makes for great acting. As far as the Academy Awards are concerned, a worthy performance typically has less to do with expression than it does exhumation — sometimes the little gold man goes to someone for bringing an original character to life, but more often it’s given to someone for bringing a real person back from the dead. At least, that’s been the case in the 21st century.

Truth be told, that’s perfectly understandable: Quantifying art is a fool’s errand, and biopics provide voters with a way of measuring how close someone has come to hitting their target. It isn’t necessarily a good way, but it’s a way all the same.

Whatever their opinion on the role itself, it would be hard to watch Gary Oldman reanimate Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” and argue that »

In a clip from the upcoming truTV documentary, “The Problem With Apu,” Kondabolu and actor Utkarsh Ambudkar discuss the impact Apu had on them growing up. ‘An Inconvenient Sequel’ Filmmakers on Modifying Their Film After Donald Trump’s Climate Policy Changes

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” had its world premiere at Sundance 2017 — the evening before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Since then, they’ve had to update their film, a follow-up to Al Gore’s 2006 Oscar-winning documentary, with the changes the new administration has made in regard to climate change.

“In many ways it was an era ago,” Shenk said in a conversation with IndieWire Editor at Large Anne Thompson following a screening at the International Documentary Association’s annual screening series. “[When] we finished the film we didn’t know what he was going to do. We heard, of course, his campaign promises…leading up to his announcement in June to leave the Paris accords, it became more and more apparent…that we really owed it to the film to update those last few minutes.”

Apple Acquires Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon Daytime Talk Show Drama for 2 Seasons

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston have just brought Apple into the scripted TV game. Their previously announced untitled drama about daytime talk show hosts has been granted a straight-to-series order for two seasons by the tech giant, which has recently begun developing original content.

The series, per Apple, will offer “an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual.”

Executive produced by Witherspoon, it’s a seismic deal for a number of reasons. Not only is the “Big Little Lies” star and executive producer committing fully to television after a longtime career working in film, but the show also marks Aniston’s official return to episodic storytelling since her time starring on “Friends.”

And it’s true, the best Pixar films are the ones that whisk you away – to a romanticized Paris where food is the ultimate currency (“Ratatouille“) or onboard a planetary spaceship inhabited by personable robots (“Wall-e“) or inside the human mind (“Inside Out“).
