An off-duty D.C. Police officer was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Baltimore after someone opened fire on the car he and a woman were sitting in, according to authorities.

Baltimore Police say that Sgt. Tony Anthony Mason Jr., 40, was found with multiple bullet wounds in his upper body in the 2800 block of Elgin Avenue after officers were called to the scene at around 12:45 a.m.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died, officials say. D.C. Police say Mason was a 17-year veteran of the force.

ABC7's Melissa DiPane has the latest in this video:

The 43-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound in her leg.

Baltimore Police say that Mason and the woman were in the parked car when an "unknown suspect" came up and started shooting.

The suspect then fled.

ABC7's Melissa DiPane reports that Mason was an undercover officer with the Vice office in the Sixth District who had also served as a police officer in the U.S. Army for five years. He reportedly lived in Baltimore and commuted to D.C., according to DiPane.

Mason was on non-contact status because of an internal investigation, according to D.C. Police.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup. Tips can also be texted to 443-902-4824.
