'Blade Runner 2049' Struggles to $31.5 Million Opening Weekend

16 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent Box Office Mojo news »

Warner Bros.'s release of Blade Runner 2049 isn't getting October off to the kind of start September saw one month ago. The dystopian sequel, arriving 35 years after the original, crash landed over its three-day opening, falling well below even the most modest of expectations. At the same time, Fox's The Mountain Between Us didn't exactly light the world on fire in its attempt at counter-programming, though it did top Mojo's pre-weekend forecast, while Lionsgate's release of My Little Pony squeaked over Mojo's meager expectations. Meanwhile, Focus's Victoria and Abdul expanded into moderate release and scored solid numbers, and A24's The Florida Project saw strong returns in its limited opening. With an estimated $31.5 million, Blade Runner 2049 finished atop the weekend box office, but fell well below expectations. Entering the weekend the Warner Bros. release, in association with Alcon Entertainment and Sony, was expected to deliver anywhere from $45- »

‘Spawn Reboot’: Todd McFarlane Cites ‘Get Out’ as an Inspiration, Says It Will Be Darker Than the Original

Following the success of “Deadpool,” the floodgates have opened for R-rated superhero movies. “Venom” is in production, and soon another movie based on a Todd McFarlane character might be too: “Spawn.” Among the inspirations McFarlane cites for this reboot in a new Entertainment Weekly interview is Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” another feature debut produced by Blumhouse.

“If I showed ‘Get Out’ to my grandma and said ‘get this, that’s a first-time director and a comedian,’ she wouldn’t see it,” McFarlane says when asked about directing his first movie.” She would just go wow, that’s a nice movie. If you put the team together, they’ll make me look like a pro every single day. Part two, I’ve directed this movie in my head 1,000 times. Why do I think I can direct it? »

Two Men Charged in Shooting on Set of Denzel Washington’s ‘Equalizer 2’

6 October 2017 10:29 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Two men have been charged following a non-fatal double shooting on the set of Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2” in Boston.

The Quincy Police Department arrested two 18-year-olds, Dionte Martinez and Thomas Perkins, on Thursday — five days after they fled the scene of the crime on Whittier Street in the city’s Roxbury section. They suspects were charged with assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition after injuring two security guards on Saturday morning.

The two victims, a 40-year-old woman and 33-year-old man, both suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals, where they were treated for their injuries.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, filming wasn’t underway at the time, and the guards don’t appear to have been the intended targets. The motive remains under investigation.

The men will be arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court on Friday.

While the big story at the box office this weekend is “Blade Runner 2049” and its surprising collapse, another Warner Bros. release, “It,” has quietly reached a milestone that few R-rated movies — none of them in the horror genre — have been able to reach: $300 million domestic. The Stephen King adaptation reached this mark in its fifth weekend in theaters, grossing an estimated $9.4 million and pushing its domestic total to $304 million, good enough to put it fifth-best among all 2017 releases. Meanwhile, the worldwide total has reached $600 million, with an international total of $298.8 million. All »

Sedate expectations: will Blade Runner 2049 give birth to the slow-burn blockbuster?

2 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel rejects the breathless fury of modern-day money-spinners in favour of a hypnotically unhurried formula. It won’t catch on – will it?

Blockbusters seem faster and more furious than ever, and not just because producers are desperate to slipstream the success of Vin Diesel’s tyre-screeching franchise. Even as baseline running times have sailed past two hours, the majority of would-be tentpole movies seem resolutely anti-downtime, charging through their story beats in flurries of frantic editing and punch-drunk action.

In a year of aggravating assaults such as the fantasy mish-mash tosh of King Arthur, the heavy-metal headache of a fifth Transformers film and Kingsman’s caffeinated, cartwheeling sequel, the languid pace of Blade Runner 2049 stands out like 2001’s monolith: a mesmerising reminder of cinema’s capacity to instil awe. At one point it is revealed how the latest replicants are “born”, splurging from suspended sacs filled with amniotic fluid. »
