When Female-Directed Shows Like ‘The Deuce’ and ‘Alias Grace’ Take On Sex, They’re Not Afraid to Make It Scary

41 minutes ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

It’s impossible to calculate how much film and television has been created on the subject of what happens when men and women interact, especially when sex enters the equation.

Three of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Primetime selections represented television being told from a distinctly female point of view, but while they all were helmed by female directors, that doesn’t mean they fit into any sort of uniform box.

The one subject none of them were afraid to tackle: How sex is much more than the act itself, and how for women in particular it creates real risk. It’s a concept that many women know instinctually, which is why it’s so important that all of these shows were brought to life by female directors.

The most sexual thing to happen in the first few episodes of “Alias Grace” is the stroking of quilts across beds, »

These days, it can be difficult to know when you read or hear the news exactly how much of that is really news and how much of it is being spun in a particular direction in order to sway popular opinion. Many individuals within the general public have become extremely disillusioned with the very idea of watching the news, largely because they feel like they are being duped every time they tune in. This has become a major problem, not only for the public-at-large, but also for the news industry itself. As fewer individuals trust various news outlets that were

This Is How the Jeopardy! Writers Room Comes Up With All of the Questions

I get the feeling that for a lot of people trying to figure out how they come up with the Jeopardy questions for each show involves bringing together the worlds’ biggest eggheads that each have a head filled with some of the most outrageous trivia imaginable and throw them in a pot to see what gets picked and what doesn’t. As rudimentary as that sounds it’s not completely off the mark. In fact it’s a lot closer to the truth than you might realize. The process is akin to a round table discussion in that eight writers are brought together

The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony isn’t until Sunday, but the celebration has already begun. The weekend kicked off in style Friday night at Variety and Women in Film’s annual nominee party, presented by Halo Top Creamery.

Emmy nominees including Viola Davis, Samira Wiley, Claire Foy, Alexander Skarsgard and Cicely Tyson walked the gray carpet before entering the party held again at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood. Many attendees also stopped to pose with, or simply marvel at, the Mercedes Benz on display before moving on to enjoy mini bean burgers, fig appetizers and the Halo Top Creamery ice cream bar that awaited them inside. (Mercedes was one of the sponsors of the night’s event.)

On a cooler than usual Southern California September night, some, like Kathryn Hahn and Abbi Jacobson, still chose to spend the bulk of the time on the patio side of the restaurant, sipping »

If Game of Thrones Characters Were in The Godfather

With each new round of Game of Thrones character representations that comes out I’m smirking with great pleasure as I prepare the write ups that are so much fun. Each fan that brings these images to life is obviously highly imaginative and has picked out only the best among the show that they think are worthy of such representation. Personally I might have added a couple more in but overall I think that Vlad made some very good choices. It’s definitely fun to see just how they might look in the world of the Godfather, and what kind of attitudes

It’s not as much of a laughing matter as you might seem to think. Take a step back and realize just who’s in office after all.
