‘It’ Director Reveals Inspiration Behind the New Pennywise

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

If Pennywise gives you the creeps and “It” hasn’t even been released yet, you’re not alone. The Pennywise from the 1990 TV adaptation of “It” had a distinctive look, so the version that graces the screen in the 2017 film version is a bit jarring. In an interview with The Guardian, Andy Muschietti detailed his longtime love of Stephen King’s works and how he used that to craft the upcoming movie, including how he wanted the new Pennywise — played by Bill Skarsgård — to look. His goal was to make the famous clown monster similar to what a child’s version. »

Clooney, Damon, Moore Talk Charlottesville at ‘Suburbicon’ Presser

8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Venice, Italy — George Clooney’s “Suburbicon” has a timely subplot — based both on present times and a 1957 incident — about racism in white America. That subplot, however, resounded deeply during the Venice Film Festival press conference for the film, which stars Matt Damon and Julianne Moore.

“I was watching a lot of speeches on the campaign trail about building fences and scapegoating minorities and I started looking around at other times in our history when we’ve unfortunately fallen back into these things,” said Clooney, talking about how the pic germinated.

While casting around for story ideas, Clooney found a 1957 incident that happened in Levittown, Pa., in which an African-American family moved into a suburban development; however, many white residents in the area reacted with violence. Then, while looking to try to make a film out of the Levittown story, he remembered that the Coen brothers had written a script called “Suburbicon,” so »

Telluride: Gary Oldman Arrives as Instant Best Actor Frontrunner in ‘Darkest Hour’

15 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For actor Gary Oldman, an Oscar nomination was elusive for many years. An Oscar win, however, could be around the corner.

The chameleonic star had dazzled for decades in an endless string of films — “Sid and Nancy,” “State of Grace,” “True Romance,” “Leon: The Professional,” “The Contender,” “Hannibal,” etc. — until 2011, when his work was finally recognized by the Motion Picture Academy. It wasn’t one of his trademark Baroque performances that got the call, but rather, his icy cool portrait of a British intelligence operative in Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The man has nothing if not range, and that range now extends to Sir Winston Churchill, about as larger-than-life as it gets.

In Joe Wright’s World War II drama “Darkest Hour,” which unspooled at the Telluride Film Festival Friday, Oldman’s showcase might be his finest hour. He digs into the towering role with uncanny resolve, fearless under gobs of makeup, »

Will Leonardo DiCaprio Give the Green Light to Joker Movie?

1 September 2017 3:30 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros. would love to see Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker in the studio’s planned origin tale, according to sources. But it’s way too early to predict whether the versatile star might be interested, and no offer has been made.

The studio’s Joker standalone film, to be directed by Todd Phillips, is expected to have Martin Scorsese on board as an executive producer.

It makes sense that a Scorsese-led Joker would look to involve DiCaprio — they’ve teamed on “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” best picture winner “The Departed,” “Shutter Island,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

But the Joker project could be a real longshot since DiCaprio, who hasn’t made a movie since he won best actor for “The Revenant,” has been attached to numerous projects that never got made, some with Scorsese. The duo are currently in development on “Devil in the White City” and “Killers of the Flower Moon »

Box Office: ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ to Lead Dismal Labor Day Weekend as ‘Tulip’ Wilts

1 September 2017 2:39 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds and a haunted doll named Annabelle are providing the only good news at an otherwise dismal Labor Day weekend box office.

The Jackson-Reynolds actioner “The Hitman's Bodyguard” will easily win the crown for the third straight weekend with about $10 million, early estimates showed Friday. The fourth weekend “Annabelle: Creation” should finish second with about $7 million — giving the New Line sequel around $88 million, making it by far the top August, 2017, grosser.

That’s pretty much the extent of the good news for the four-day period, which the major studios have large abandoned because of lack of enthusiasm for spending the requisite marketing dollars at a time when moviegoers’ attention is supposedly focused on football and end-of-summer barbecues.

Sony’s release of the restored “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” should finish the weekend with a modest $2 million at 901 sites. That’s enough to out-distance The Weinstein Company’s opening of its long-stalled »

Mayweather-McGregor Set to Challenge Pay-Per-View Record

23 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight is closing in on a new record for North American pay-per-view buys.

According to a representative for Showtime, the Aug. 26 super welterweight bout is currently on track to reach the mid- to high-4 million buys mark, putting it at the very least within striking distance of the previous record of 4.6 million domestic buys set in 2015 when Mayweather fought Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather had also previously set PPV records with his fights against “Canelo” Álvarez in 2013 (2.2 million buys) and Oscar de la Hoya in 2007 (2.4 million buys).

As Variety previously reported, the fight also yielded 239 illegal live-streamed rebroadcasts online, reaching an estimated 2.93 million viewers worldwide, according to content-security vendor Irdeto. In addition, an estimated 445,000 people downloaded the fight after it ended, including 78,000 in the U.S. and 49,000 in the U.K. and Ireland.

The fight saw Ufc champion McGregor take on the undefeated Mayweather in McGregor’s pro boxing debut. Mayweather »

No one doubts the humanitarian bona fides of actor-director Angelina Jolie. Her work with the United Nations has been rightly praised, and two of the films she directed—In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken—demonstrated her commitment to making movies with a social conscience. Her newest movie, First They Killed My Father, which had its world premiere in Telluride and will be shown in theaters and on Netflix this month, may be closest to her on a personal level. 'Reinventing Marvin' ('Marvin'): Film Review | Venice 2017

3 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The films of prolific director Anne Fontaine range from the serious (Agnus Dei, Nathalie) to the ridiculous (Perfect Mothers) to the slickly entertaining (The Girl from Monaco, Coco Before Chanel, Gemma Bovery), making her one of the more diversified filmmakers operating in this sort of semi-commercial vein in France.

Her latest effort, Reinventing Marvin (or just Marvin in French), is a stab at yet another genre: the queer coming-of-age story, which she mixes into a confessional performance piece that includes, among other fourth wall-breaking elements, Isabelle Huppert co-starring as herself. The result is a hodgepodge that »

'Oblivion Verses' ('Los Versos del Olvido'): Film Review | Venice 2017

Blending elements of magical realism, political strife and Kafkaesque ennui to partially satisfying effect, Oblivion Verses (Los Versos del Olvido) marks an intriguing if rather elusive feature debut for Iranian writer-director Alireza Khatami.

Set in an unknown Latin American state (the film was presumably shot in Chile), there are moments that recall Pablo Lorrain’s second feature, Post Mortem, which also dealt with morgues, death squads and the trauma of unclaimed corpses in a corrupted land. But here, the narrative is much more opaque, pushing viewers to clutch at straws in order to follow Khatami’s different plot strands, which shuttle between »

Venice Film Review: ‘No Date, No Signature’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Obsession grips a forensics doctor convinced he may have caused a child’s death in “No Date, No Signature,” a handsomely made, exceptionally well-played drama that largely works despite a few significant plot holes. More tightly constructed than director Vahid Jalilvand’s involving though schematic debut “Wednesday, May 9,” the film explores questions of culpability and responsibility in a society constantly playing on the edge of the rule of law. A no-holds-barred performance by Navid Mohammadzadeh (“Nahid”), recognized by the Fajr jury with their supporting actor prize, gives “No Date” its emotional core, even though the main character’s motivations remain murky. Festivals will be lured by the Venice slot combined with Jalilvand’s Fajr win for best director.

While driving home at night, Dr. Kaveh Nariman (Amir Agha’ee) is sideswiped by a reckless driver and hits a motorcycle. The bike’s passengers, Moosa (Mohammadzadeh), his wife Leila (Zakiyeh Behbahani) and their young daughter are only slightly »

George Clooney Jokes About Becoming U.S. President: ‘Sounds Like Fun’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Venice, Italy — George Clooney for President?

That was the final question put to the U.S. actor/director during the Venice Film Festival press conference for his dark comedy “Suburbicon.”

“Would I like to be the next president? Oh, that sounds like fun,” he said. At which point Matt Damon, who stars in the film, interjected: “Can I just say that I’d like anybody to be the next president of the United States. Right away, please!”

Clooney, whose father ran for Congress in 2004, repping Kentucky’s fourth district — he lost by a 10 percent margin — has been fielding that question for years. And in the past his answer has been a more clear-cut “no.”

“Who would ever want to live like that?” Clooney said in 2015, putting a freeze on the notion that he’d go into politics. “I’m friends with a lot of those guys and I just think it’s hell.”

Foreign Productions Flock to Brussels’ Locations, Tax Incentives

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The city of Brussels has seen a lot of excitement lately. Gangsters have been running wild with racing-car drivers, the Hitler Youth have taken to marching in the street, and a submarine has sunk, costing hundreds of lives. It’s fair to say that, even as far as movie shoots go, Brussels is nothing if not diverse, playing itself in the 1980s for Michael R. Roskam’s crime drama “Racer and the Jailbird,” doubling as wartime Berlin in Amma Asante’s powerful love story “Where Hands Touch,” and even dressing up as Russia in Thomas Vinterberg’s “Kursk,” the story of the Russian submarine that exploded underwater during a naval exercise in 2000. No wonder they’re calling it “the queen of filming locations.”

There are many reasons for the rise of Brussels as an international shooting hub, starting with its location in the heart of Europe, just 80 minutes from Paris and two hours by Eurostar from London »
