HBO’s “Veep” is about to take a bow, with the network announcing Wednesday that the heralded comedy will come to a close after its upcoming seventh season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has starred as hapless politician Selina Meyer since the series debuted in April 2012. “The decision to bring ‘Veep’ to a close at the end of next season is bittersweet,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “We love the show and everyone involved but respect the producers’ choice to bring Selina Meyer’s journey to its conclusion after an extraordinary run of critical and award-winning acclaim.” “Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ comedic brilliance infused Selina with a. »

CBS is developing a TV adaptation of “L.A. Confidential,” Variety has learned.

Based on James Ellroy’s classic novel of the same name, the series would follow the paths of three homicide detectives, a female reporter, and a Hollywood actress as they intersect while the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer through the seedy underbelly of 1950’s Los Angeles.

New Regency, Lionsgate Television and CBS Television Studios will produce, with New Regency’s Arnon Milchan serving as executive producer. Jordan Harper is set to write and executive produce. Harper previously wrote for and produced the CBS drama “The Mentalist.” Most recently, he served as a writer and supervising producer on Fox’s “Gotham.” He is repped by UTA and The Shuman Company.

The novel was first published in 1990, the third entry in Ellroy’s “L.A. Quartet,” which explored life in the City of Angels in the 1940’s and ’50s. The »

‘It,’ Stephen King Adaptation, Top Horror Pre-Seller in History

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It,” the hotly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s doorstop of a novel, is shaping up to be a box office monster. The horror film is expected to make $60 million when it debuts on Friday. “It” has shattered records to become the top horror film pre-seller in history, surprising 2011’s “Paranormal Activity 3.” It also took the crown as Fandango’s top pre-seller among September releases, eclipsing 2016’s “Sully.”

Fandango didn’t say exactly how many tickets “It” has sold. If the film hits $60 million, it will become the biggest September opening of all time. “Hotel Transylvania 2” was the previous record holder with its $48 million debut.

“It” follows a group of teen outcasts who battle a mysterious and deadly force — one that manifests itself as a child-eating clown. Andrés Muschietti, best known for “Mama,” directs a cast that includes Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, the clown, along with Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, »

Venice Film Review: ‘The Cousin’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There are three tones in actor-director Tzahi Grad’s “The Cousin,” an uneven semi-thriller that starts as a discomfiting story of Israeli-Palestinian prejudice, cranks it up beyond credibility and then inexplicably shifts into comedy territory in the last 10 minutes, just when a lynching appears to be brewing. Maybe building up all that tension and then popping it like a big balloon was meant to allow audiences to feel better about themselves, but letting everyone off the hook after making them question their deep-seated racism is disingenuous at best. It’s a pity, because the first two-thirds work well in exposing the distrust even so-called open-minded people feel about the “other” in their midst, inviting comparisons with “Get Out.”

Grad’s personal investment in the project is high: As star as well as writer and director, he plays Naftali, a version of himself, filming in his own home and casting his two kids Ben and Alma Grad Cohen »

Venice Film Review: ‘Love and Bullets’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If over-the-top “Gomorra” types who could comfortably inhabit Little Italy as much as the neighborhoods around Vesuvius are an endless source of mirth-making, then the Manetti brothers’ loud and brash musical about a Camorra boss and his henchmen could be an entertaining diversion. For others, this over-long, self-indulgent romp through every mafia stereotype in the book offers moments of amusement in between tiresome set pieces and musical numbers most noteworthy for their stridency. Because “Love and Bullets” feels different from the majority of Italian screen fare apart from the Manettis’ previous musical “Song ‘e Napule,” reaction at home will likely be positive.  Offshore however, the most that can be expected is scattered European distribution and Italian showcases.

A semi-bleached drone shot of the Bay of Naples settles on the funeral of don Vincenzo Strozzalone (Carlo Buccirosso) and the sobs of his cheaply made-up, flamboyantly grief-stricken widow Maria (Claudia Gerini). Don Vincenzo was the underworld’s Fish King »

Film Review: ‘Hostiles’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s hardly “Heaven’s Gate,” but there’s a similar grandiosity of ambition — and a familiar sense of folly — to Scott Cooper’s “Hostiles,” a $40 million, independently produced, sure-to-be-r-rated Western in a marketplace where even a more broadly appealing oater, like Seth MacFarlane’s tongue-in-cheek “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” can barely earn that kind of money back. But “Hostiles” is no spoof; it’s a deadly serious examination of the strained relationship between white men and Native Americans in this country, one that acknowledges the racism and brutality the U.S. Army showed to frontier tribes, while giving a bigoted cavalry officer played by Christian Bale a chance to redeem himself.

Debuting at the Telluride film festival without a distributor in place, this impressively mounted, intellectually corrupt period piece isn’t your traditional Western, and clearly fancies itself a revisionist take on so many black-and-white us-vs.-them tales, »

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Majid Majidi, director of award-winning films including “Children of Heaven,” “Baran,” and “Muhammad: The Messenger of God,” is returning to India for his next project “Gold Mine.”

The Iranian filmmaker is reuniting with the producers of India-set “Beyond the Clouds,” Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishor Arora, under their production outfit Namah Pictures, for “Gold Mine.” The film will revolve around the difficult lives of children who work in coal mines.

Casting will begin in November and principal photography will take place mid-2018.

“India has so many stories to tell within its myriad cultures of people from a different milieu. The ambience of India is just magical, truly incomparable to any other country. Within that ambience, exists a wonderful relationship between human beings and nature. The undying spirit of people and their hope from life despite their hardships is unbelievable,” said Majidi.

“Beyond the Clouds” will play in competition at the London Film Festival in October.
