The Thomas Jefferson Memorial stands as a symbol of liberty and endures as a site for reflection and inspiration for all visitors. Despite being home to one of America’s most influential founding fathers, the Jefferson Memorial is perhaps most famous for the cherry blossom trees that surround it and the Tidal Basin which the memorial overlooks.

Construction officials learned that the Jefferson Memorial, which weighs 32,000 tons, had shifted significantly since its initial construction in 1938. Engineers working to restore the Memorial Seawall noticed the timber pilings that supported the structure were slipping away from the memorial.

The Trust helped leverage more than $150 million in federal funds for restoration projects, part of which were used to repair the Memorial Seawall. The Trust also managed the Cherry Tree Centennial Improvement Project at the Japanese Lantern on the Tidal Basin.

The public may visit the Jefferson Memorial 24 hours a day. National Park Service Rangers are on duty to answer questions from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily and to provide interpretive programs every hours on the hour from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
