Box Office Weekend: Spider-Man Drops and Neighbors Moves In

7 hours ago | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has apparently had its big day at the box office as it fell to second place with an estimated $37.2 million. Its successor is Neighbors, the R-rated comedy starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen. With an estimated $51.1 million, it made a strong start, especially considering it nearly tripled its production costs in a single weekend, and likely to do much better. Not that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has much to worry about…despite not getting the sort of critical praise its fellow Marvel adaptations have been getting as of late, it has made $550.9 million in worldwide gross…and even if it cost as much as Spider-Man 3 to make ($280 million budget), it is still a money maker. The Other Woman has also managed to defy its critics with an estimated $9.3 million and pulling off a decent income of $61.7 million over its $40 million costs.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Already Lost Top Spot at Box Office

8 hours ago | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

After debuting to $92 million in its first weekend, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" already lost the top spot at the domestic box office by grossing only $37 million. In total, the superhero film earned $148 million domestically, but thanks to foreign ticket sales, it grossed $550 million worldwide so far. Unfortunately, the sequel still has a lousy 54% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. The first place went to "Neighbors," a new comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. The film earned an impressive $51.1 million domestically, the fourth highest opening of all time for an R-rated comedy, behind "The Hangover II" ($85.9 million), "Sex and the City" ($57 million) and "Ted" ($54.5 million). The movie also performed well overseas, grossing an additional $34.4 million for a worldwide debut of $85.5 million. "Neighbors" cost only $18 million to make, which means that it's already a huge success. The new movie, which is Rogen's best opening for a live-action film, has a 74% fresh rating. Meanwhile, »

Bad Neighbours great, Oz films not good

9 hours ago | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Hollywood comedy Bad Neighbours ruled for the second consecutive weekend at the Australian box-office while two Australian films struggled to find audiences.

Despite favourable reviews and copious publicity, Craig Monahan.s redemptive drama Healing had a modest debut, taking $81,000 at 38 screens.

Including previews, the film starring Don Hany and Hugo Weaving has grossed $96,000. Hany plays a criminal serving a long stretch for murder who is rehabilitated by a program caring for wounded eagles and other big birds in a minimum-security prison farm.

Sophie Hyde.s 52 Tuesdays fell by 26%, fetching $17,500 in its second weekend on 10 screens and $80,000 thus far. Both films generated positive reviews and wide media coverage, underlining that sometimes that isn't enough to attract cinemagoers.

B.O. takings totalled a shade over $11 million, down from the previous weekend.s $11.4 million, according to Rentrak, but only two titles clocked more than $1 million.

Box Office: Neighbors Come Out On Top

9 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Amir here, with the weekend's box office report. Three new films were released, all of which surprised with their numbers but in different directions. Neighbors, the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy beat The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to first place, and while that isn't surprising in and of itself, the fact that it raked in $51m certainly is. I quite like Seth Rogen, at least compared to other dudebro-y comedians of the moment, and Rose Byrne is a treasure, but I couldn't find the enthusiasm to drive to their neighbourhood just yet. Maybe when the film is out DVD...

Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return turned out to be a flop of catastrophic proportions, the likes of which I don't think I've ever seen. It managed a paltry 1.4k per screen average. Mom's Night Out is yet another "faith-based" film, this time dressed as a comedy - not that Heaven Is For Real »

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: May 11th, 2014

11 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The R-rated comedy reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, proving that a restrictive rating can still reap success.

The number 1 film this weekend is Neighbors (read our review) with $51 million, which is one of the biggest debuts for an R-rated comedy. The Seth Rogen and Zac Efron warring neighbor comedy far exceeded expectations and has set the tone for the genre heading into the rest of the summer. Not to mention, the film is now Seth Rogen’s biggest opening weekend ever for a live action film.

Obviously, with A Million Ways to Die in the West right around the corner, the film will have to do a lot of its work quickly, ...

Neighbors: Family vs. Frat—Who Comes Out on Top?

13 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

In Neighbors, married couple Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are enjoying the bliss that is a new baby while at the same time tackling the fact that they can't just go to a rave anymore. (Or that anyone in their actual 20s still calls them that.) Early on, they attempt "baby's first rave," but are exhausted before exiting the front door. Are they doomed to be old folks, already? Everything changes when the dudes of Delta Psi Beta move into the empty house right next door. The frat's leader, Teddy (Zac Efron) is hunky and charming and shirtless every chance he gets. Soon the bonding of old and young makes way for a war between two houses though not the kind that takes place in »

Weekend Box Office: Neighbors Takes Number One Over Sinking Spider-Man

13 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It was a good weekend to be Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Not so much to be Spider-Man, Trace Adkins or Dorothy from Kansas. Neighbors debuted at a solid number one with $51 million, making it the third largest ever opening for a rated-r comedy (Sex and the City is the highest, opening with $57 million in 2008, and Ted which opened at $54 million in 2012). That's the highest ever live-action opening for Rogen (his previous best was Green Hornet, $33 million in 2011). The same goes for Efron who has struggled to find the box office limelight post High School Musical 3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took a hard hit, dropping almost 60% in its second weekend. After ten days in theaters it is still struggling to hit the $150 million mark, something the previous Spider-man movies (both franchises) usually managed in their first week, sometimes in their first weekend. Seth Rogen and Zac Efron hosted a party at the movies this weekend, and audiences showed up in droves for it.Playing at 3,279 locations, Neighbors opened to an incredible $51.1 million. That's one of the biggest debuts ever for an original R-rated comedy.Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell hard in its second outing. Still, the superhero sequel is making up for its domestic shortcomings with strong overseas earnings.Among original R-rated comedies, Neighbors trailed Ted ($54.4 million) and Sex and the City ($57 million, and debatably "original"). At the same time, it was ahead of major R-rated hits like The Hangover, The Heat and 21 Jump Street. It's also the biggest debut ever for a live-action Seth Rogen movie ahead of The Green Hornet ($33.5 million). From its first preview, Neighbors looked like a hit. The comedy had a relatable, clearly-articulated premise ("Family vs. Frat") that was hammered home in all of the marketing material. »

Box Office: Seth Rogen and Zac Efron fuel 'Neighbors' to $51 million opening

16 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The first surprise hit of the summer arrived this weekend as the R-rated comedy "Neighbors" partied hard for a monster $51 million opening. Actually, anyone who had seen the Nick Stoller directed flick since its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March could have told you it would be a hit, but a $50 million plus opening? That had to be a dream scenario for distributor Universal Pictures.  Instead, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron can now credit the flick for their biggest live action openings ever.  And for Efron, in particular, "Neighbors" success proves he really does have longterm leading man potential. Universal's gain was Sony Pictures's loss as last week's champ, "Amazing Spider-Man 2," fell and it fell it hard.  The second installment in the Spidey "reboot" dropped 59.4% (it could be 60% by the time Monday's actuals come in) and earned an estimated $37.2 million for $147.9 million to date.  With "Godzilla" and »

Box Office Top Ten: 'Neighbors' Pushes 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Out of Top Slot

17 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Original Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" (Universal) easily won the weekend. The race for first place wasn't even close against the second weekend of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony). When comic-book movies open strong they usually fall off dramatically.  This weekend doesn't measure up to last year, when "The Avengers" soared to much bigger numbers, so the overall Top 10 dropped ($126 million against $151 million). In just two short weeks, the year to date total comparison has fallen from over 9% ahead (for the first four months) to just over 6% as we get into the summer. "Neighbors" did better than last year's "The Great Gatsby," which lagged $20 million behind "The Avengers." This weekend saw some solid holdovers, far above average, in the Top 10. But two new releases, "Moms' Night Out" (Sony) and "Legends of Oz" (Clarius) were duds, delivering less than $5 million. 1. Box Office Report: Unfriendly Neighbors Dethrone The Amazing Spider-Man 2

17 hours ago | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Well, it only took one weekend for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to be kicked to the curb by some unfriendly Neighbors. Universal’s Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy was slated to be in a close fight for first place at the box office this weekend with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, strong buzz, funny ads, good reviews and a lack of broad, four-quadrant appeal comedies this year gave Nicholas Stoller’s film the momentum to open at #1, with an estimated $51.1 million.

If estimates hold, Neighbors will be the third biggest opening for an R-rated comedy, behind Sex and the City ($57 million) and Ted ($54.4 million). More impressively, the film surpassed the initial three-day take of summer comedy behemoth The Hangover ($45 million), and flew past 21 Jump Street ($36.3 million) and Knocked Up ($30.7 million), among comparable titles. It is also the second year in a row when a film on the second weekend »

The summer of 2014 is off to a great start following last week's showing for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although it wasn't able to hold the #1 spot for long, as it faced the R-rated frathouse comedy Neighbors (Universal Pictures), starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne and Dave Franco. The latter ended the weekend with an estimated $51 million, making it the biggest non-animated opening for both Rogen (his previous best being The Green Hornet with $33.5 million) and Efron, besting High School Musical 3's $42 million opening. »

Got to give credit where credit is due, and though several other box analysts last week were predicting a Neighbors upset over The Amazing Spider Man 2 this weekend, Eric Childress of EFilmcritic.com and the weekly box office analyst for the Movies and Money reports on Wciu-tv in Chicago, predicted that Neighbors would handily beat Spider Man 2 his weekend, long before anyone else did. Box Office: 'Neighbors' Knocks Down The Door With Big #1 Opening

18 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It looks like Spider-Man's biggest villains this weekend were Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. The duo's "Neighbors" knocked Sony's superhero from the top slot with a big $51 million opening.  Just how big was it? It's the fourth best opening ever for an R-rated comedy. Damn. But it wasn't just a big success at home. Overseas, the comedy took $34.4 million—more than the entire international tally of "This Is The End"—in its first weekend. And in another surprising statistic, the audience for the film was 53% female. So much for Seth Rogen and bros only playing to ... bros. Basically, this is an all around success for Universal, with the movie clearly hitting all the quadrants it needed to, bang on. But the same can't be said for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." It continues to underperform domestically. It dropped 59% week-to-week versus 44% for the first film, and when all is said and done, the »

‘Neighbors’ Collects $51.1 Mil, Unseats ‘Spider-Man’ in Box Office Shake-Up

King of the keg-stand this weekend, Universal’s R-rated frat comedy “Neighbors,” with its estimated boffo $51.1 million opening, interrupted the Stateside reign of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which fell a steeper-than-expected 59% in its second frame for a projected $37.2 million through Sunday.

The Sony superhero tentpole — which did, however, hold onto the overseas weekend crown, with its estimated $69.5 million — reached a total $550 million worldwide, of which more than $400 million comes from international markets.

“Ultimately, (the domestic drop) was within the realm of a picture of this size,” said Sony worldwide distribution chief Rory Bruer.

That said, “Spider-Man” suffered from the mega-buzz building around “Neighbors” for the past several weeks. The Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy ultimately played best with women, at 53%, though men accounted for a respectable 47% of the opening.

Universal prexy of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco said she is estimating a 30% drop from Friday to Sunday, but that could »

Review of Seth Rogen's Neighbors

It's Seth Rogen versus Zac Efron in director Nicholas Stoller's new comedy Neighbors. What you saw in the trailer is what you get in the movie. So if you liked the marketing materials, then chances are you'll enjoy watching this movie. I was completely entertained from start to finish, but I'm the kind of guy who appreciates Rogen's style of comedy.

The story follows a couple with a newborn baby who invest all of their money in a house to start living the American dream. Everything looks like it's going to be great for the small family until a fraternity moves in next door. The fraternity has a dream of their own, and that dream is throwing the biggest and craziest party in the history of the frat.

Rogen and his wife try to work things out with the frat, even trying to be friends in the beginning, but »
