Proposal to Republish Previous Versions of HTML and XHTML as Obsolete Recommendations

HTML5 logoW3C Advisory Committee Representatives received today a proposal to republish a series of HTML and XHTML W3C Recommendations as Obsolete Recommendations, in response to a request from the Web Platform Working Group as these specifications are superseded by new versions and are no longer recommended for implementation on the Web platform.

This has been made possible by the addition this year to the W3C Process Document of a process to mark a Recommendation as Obsolete. An obsolete specification is one that the W3C community has decided should no longer be used. For example, it may no longer represent best practices, or it may not have received wide adoption and is not apparently likely to be adopted in the future. The status of an obsolete specification remains active under the W3C Patent Policy, but it is not recommended for future implementation. In this case, “obsolete” states that each of these specifications has been superseded by more recent specifications.

For example, as part of our commitment to the platform’s future, we recommend that all implementers use the latest HTML5 –where HTML5 is the term to refer to the family of specifications. We are proposing to obsolete the particular 28 October 2014 W3C Recommendation which henceforth shall be called HTML 5.0, which has been superseded by HTML 5.1, a W3C Recommendation since 1 November 2016. This aims at clarifying the status of the document and point developers and implementers to the latest version of HTML5.

W3C Invites Implementations of Indexed Database API 2.0

The Web Platform Working Group invites implementations of Indexed Database API 2.0 Candidate Recommendation. This specification is the Second Edition of Indexed Database API. The First Edition became a W3C Recommendation on 8 January 2015.

This document defines APIs for a database of records holding simple values and hierarchical objects. Each record consists of a key and some value. Moreover, the database maintains indexes over records it stores. An application developer directly uses an API to locate records either by their key or by using an index. A query language can be layered on this API. An indexed database can be implemented using a persistent B-tree data structure.

W3C Invites Implementations of HTML 5.2

The Web Platform Working Group invites implementations of HTML 5.2 Candidate Recommendation. This specification defines the 5th major version, second minor revision of the core language of the World Wide Web: the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). In this version, new features continue to be introduced to help Web application authors, new elements continue to be introduced based on research into prevailing authoring practices, and special attention continues to be given to defining clear conformance criteria for user agents in an effort to improve interoperability.

W3C Invites Implementations of CSS Containment Module Level 1

The CSS Working Group invites implementations of CSS Containment Module Level 1 Candidate Recommendation. This CSS module describes the ‘contain’ property, which indicates that the element’s subtree is independent of the rest of the page. This enables heavy optimizations by user agents when used well.

CSS is a language for describing the rendering of structured documents (such as HTML and XML) on screen, on paper, in speech, etc.

Call for Review: HTML 5.1 2nd Edition Proposed Recommendation

The Web Platform Working Group has published a Proposed Recommendation of HTML 5.1 2nd Edition. This specification defines the 2nd edition of the 5th major version, first minor revision of the core language of the World Wide Web: the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). In this version, a significant error with HTML 5.1 has been rectified, as noted in the Errata corrected section.

W3C Invites Implementations of High Resolution Time Level 2

The Web Performance Working Group invites implementations of a revised Candidate Recommendation of High Resolution Time Level 2. This specification defines an API that provides the time origin, and current time in sub-millisecond resolution, such that it is not subject to system clock skew or adjustments. This publication updates the High Resolution Time Level 2 to include the material from the previous Working Draft of High Resolution Time Level 3. In practice, this bring the timeOrigin attribute into Level 2.

First Public Working Draft: Verifiable Claims Data Model and Representations

The Verifiable Claims Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of Verifiable Claims Data Model and Representations. Driver’s licenses are used to claim that we are capable of operating a motor vehicle, university degrees can be used to claim our education status, and government-issued passports enable holders to travel between countries. This specification provides a standard way to express these sorts of claims on the Web in a way that is cryptographically secure, privacy respecting, and automatically verifiable.
