‘Super Troopers 2’ Lands Spring 2018 Release Date

16 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox Searchlight has set an April 20, 2018, release date for “Super Troopers 2” — 17 years after the original.

Jay Chandrasekhar is directing the comedy sequel, as he did on the original. Filmmaking team Broken Lizard raised $4.4 million in a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in 2015 that saw more than 50,000 contributors. It was one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns for a movie along with the $5.7 million raised by fans for the “Veronica Mars” movie starring Kristen Bell.

Donation incentives for “Super Tropers 2” on the first day included a producer title for $10,000, a speaking actor role for $10,000, a trip to the ballpark with the main actors for $15,000, and the patrol car to be used in the filming for $35,000. “Super Troopers 2” met the initial goal of $2 million (set by Fox Searchlight) in 26 hours.

Super Troopers 2” reunites all five Troopers from the original film — Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. The »

John Boyega Hints Again at Possible Cameos by Princes William and Harry in ‘Jedi’

19 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

John Boyega has hinted again that heirs to the British throne Prince William and Prince Harry and actor Tom Hardy have cameos in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program Friday morning to promote Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” Boyega was asked about the rumors he fueled when last on the show – that the two royals had secret cameos in “The Last Jedi” as stormtroopers – and whether the princes had lines.

“I think they took that scene out,” Boyega said jokingly, then added: “I’ve had enough with those Prince William secrets, man. They came on set; they were there, man. Tom Hardy was there, too – I said it. I’m sick of hiding this.”

The actor, who plays former stormtrooper Finn in the sequel trilogy, said questions had dogged him ever since the rumors first began circulating in April 2016, when William and Harry visited the “Jedi” set (pictured). “Every time I get »

Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher to Star in ‘Shaft’ Sequel

17 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After originally planning a full reboot of the ’70s classic, New Line is reverting back to a familiar formula for the next installment of “Shaft,” while also leaving the door open for a new face to take over the franchise.

Sources tell Variety that Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to reprise his role of the titular character with “Survivor’s Remorse” star Jessie T. Usher in talks to play Jackson’s son in the film.

Tim Story is directing a script from “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.

The original 1971 version — based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel — starred Richard Roundtree as a smooth private detective who’s hired by a drug lord to find his kidnapped daughter. The character became a pop culture icon and the theme song, written by Isaac Hayes, went on to win an Oscar.

Paramount Pictures rebooted the film in 2002 with Samuel L. Jackson taking over the role, and »

19 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

It's a trap! Or maybe not.

Adam Driver will intrigue Star Wars fans with a Sunday interview on the Today show in which he discusses his Sith character, Kylo Ren.

The 33-year-old actor doesn't give anyway any specifics, obviously, but he does make a comment that is interesting when asked by Willie Geist if fans "will be happy with that happens to Kylo."

Driver responds, "God, I hope. I think it will be hopefully unexpected."

Now, this could mean anything. Perhaps Luke or Rey cut him down or maybe he pulls a Darth Vader and redeems himself. Or maybe none of the »

Nordic Content Powers Up Haugesund Market

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Haugesund, Norway — A record number of 440 Nordic and international film professionals have registered for the 23rd New Nordic Films market at the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, now the largest Nordic film market.

It opens on Tuesday Aug. 22 at Haugesund’s Edda Theatre with the announcement of the nominations for the Nordic Council Film Prize, one of the largest and most prestigious awards in the Nordic countries.

“In the last couple of years, the international focus on Nordic content has been increasing, which is the main reason for the growing participation,” said market director Gyda Velvin Myklebust, who has been in charge of the operation for 15 years.

She added that another reason was the market’s presentation of films “on four levels”: Graduation movies from Nordic film schools; screenplays for new features; works-in-progress and completed features – as well as the projects in the Nordic Co-Production and Finance Market.”

President Trump saw support drop precipitously this week after he botched his response to the events last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a white supremacist rally called “Unite the Right” turned violent. And then he made things even worse with a follow-up press conference on Tuesday. The result: all week long advisors, supporters, and employees fled his administration. It started Monday with chief executives of Intel Corp, Merck & Co Inc, and Under Armour Inc, who resigned from Trump’s American Manufacturing Council. All of them said, or implied, they were leaving because of how Trump responded to Charlottesville, where on. »

Univision CEO Blasts ‘Abject Failure’ to Denounce White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis

10 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Randy Falco, CEO of Univision Communications, is the latest corporate leader to call for a forceful condemnation of white supremacists and neo-Nazis in the wake of last weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, Va.

Falco sent a memo to staffers at the Spanish-language media giant pledging to speak out against attacks on immigrants, the Lgbt community, the media and those who “espouse racist and hateful views.”

Falco’s statement follows on the heels of similar statements from Apple CEO Tim Cook, 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch and other CEOs in the wake of President Donald Trump’s conflicting statements about the Charlottesville rally of white supremacists, which left a 32-year-old counter-protester dead on Saturday.

Falco tangled with Trump during the presidential campaign after the then-candidate asserted that many Mexican immigrants were “rapists” and criminals. Univision severed ties with Trump’s Miss Universe beauty pageant franchise in 2015, just months after signing a multi-year pact to carry the events »
