Oregon State University scientists used a drone to study how blue whales pick and choose their meals. Filmed in the Southern Ocean off New Zealand, the video shows a blue whale devouring a krill swarm the size of the whale itself. Scientists say this footage shows “lunge-feeding” is so energy-intensive, these whales won’t waste their time on low-reward prey patches. Video courtesy of Todd Chandler, OSU.
